We've probably all been around other Christians who have condemned others for what they insist is "sin" yet isn't stated as such in the bible. Some Christians think that drinking is a sin yet Paul encouraged Timothy to drink a little wine for his stomach ailments. I've heard Christians condemn other Christians because they drink. What kinds of things do you say to them?

I ignore them.....

I think there are those who, a bit like the Pharisees, replace biblical Law with their invented substitutions designed so that THEY can keep them and thus boast of how goody-goody THEY are and how horrible everyone else is. IF I respond at all, it's a note that ALL of us are sinners.... ALL of us stand in constant need of MERCY and that without it, all of us would be dead and in hell.... ALL of us.

These modern-day Pharisees can boast that the women don't wear pants (EASY to do that!) or don't play cards - except for UNO (EASY to do that!) or don't dance except for folk and square dance (EASY to do that!) and then point to self and insist, "What a good boy am I." Of course, the Law that we must be PERFECT even as God Himself is.... we must be HOLY even as God is.... we must LOVE all even as Christ did on the Cross.... all that is just, well, forgotten (cuz THAT'S not so easy). Phariseeism never died, it just got repackaged and moved into fundamentalistic Christianity.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

- Josiah, the chief of sinners.

Not that it bothers me, but yes, there are Christians today that feel a liberty to drink, it's a thing where they say, "Well, Jesus turned the water...," and all as we often rationalize stuff. But yet, God's word says "Wine is a mocker." The thing is, not if is it right or wrong. But is it pleasing to what God wants...
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise (Pro 20:1).
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has babblings? Who has wounds without cause? Who has red eyes? They that tarry long at wine; and those that go to seek mixed wine," and so forth (Pro 23:29-30).
Paul said, "All things are lawful for me." But "I will not be brought under the power of any" (1Cor 6:12). Does it affect my judgment at all? Does it affect my attitudes? Then I'm being brought under its power.
In the New Testament we are told that in choosing those as overseers in the church, they are not to be given to wine. In the Old Testament, there were two sons of Aaron, who started to offer incense before the Lord, and the fire of God came from the altar and consumed the two sons of Aaron. And when this happened, the Lord said unto Moses, "Speak unto Aaron and his sons and tell them that they are not to be drinking wine when they come in to offer sacrifices before Me." For God does not want service from or of any kind of a false stimulant. Let us never forget, we are to be a continuous living sacrifice (Rom 12:1; 1Pet 2:5).

So I guess your question or my pondering answer (I guess I should say), depends if it's a drunken lifestyle.
Regardless though (upon further enlightenment), I Stand with Messy's answer below.

I don't think it's a sin to drink a glass of whine with a party, but I don't do it anymore. If someone is an alcoholic I don't condemn, just try to help. I noticed that people who were never addicted themselves are easy to condemn. They're right. Smoking is bad, but it's how you say it and if you have some empathy. On the other hand, they may be annoying, but they do help you get rid of it.

You just gave the solution instead of the intrusion... the Love of Christ. Thank you.

The sin is getting dfrunik, not drinking. Christ never sinned so if drinking was a sin then He would have, seriously the bible tells us to take a little wine for health.

Yes but if I take one glass of whine when I haven't eaten all day I'm drunk. Some drink much more and notice nothing.

In my OP I wasn't meaning anything about getting drunk since I think perhaps we all feel that's a sin? There are Christians who frown upon any small bit of drinking and condemn those who do it.

Does anyone have any specific examples of what you would say to those who are condemning others?

I usually just make a joke about it.

There's a specific group who believes that. It doesn't bother me. Only if a bunch of them would really condemn one person I'd step up and say something about it. Actually I have never seen that happening.

Where I used to live there was one denominational group that believed it...they also believed women shouldn't wear pants but the women could really cake on their make up so they looked no different than street walkers if you know what I mean ;) I'm not saying they were hookers. It just seemed as if they were so strict on their viewpoints but not strict enough on others (as in their top pastors had affairs and they tried to shrug it off).

Harsh words should be reserved for those who adversely affect others because of intoxication (of anything, even legal medications that make driving (to use one example), dangerous). Otherwise, it's none of their business and unless it's real compassion for a problem drinker, legal drug abuser etc - take your self righteous measurement elsewhere.

Oh but those can make me mad. Some women on christian chat telling me I couldn't wear jeans and condemning me, I was not dressed decent. LOL jeans is the Dutch national dress code for women.

Just make certain your denim isn't a blend and the jeans are intended for women, and you should be A-Ok Biblically

It totally depends on how they say it. I used to post on a Dutch reformed forum. Drinking was absolutely no problem, they had beer and whine topics, but no pants and skirts to church and a hat and do not even go to the grocery store on sunday. Evil. Lol first I clashed with one such a woman, but then I thought: oh well what does she know? She's raised in that church. Who cares? We became best friends.1562_540.jpg1562_540.jpg

As most of you know, I am not a Christian...however, I think there are many things we can all agree are just wrong, like murder, rape, theft, etc. However, many activities can fall into "gray areas" and as far as drinking, I would agree with Bill that it is drunkenness that is spoken of in the Bible as being sinful and not drinking in and of itself.

If I were a Christian, and I decided to have a beer and another Christian tried to condemn me for it, I would likely respond with something along the lines of "the casting of stones should be left to those without sin, am I not right, brother?"

If you wore those on a date with me, I'd even let you ride up front in the cab of the pickup!

Bill, as dashing a figure you would likely be sporting a pair of "Daisy Dukes," I'd still have to choose Renske in bib overalls. :rofl3:
