Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

For those who see radical separation between gospel and law the law of the Spirit of life in Christ appears to be an exception if not a contradiction of their radical separation.

.... funny how you always seem to eliminate The Savior, how you always just delete Christ Jesus. HE is the one who saves...... not you by keeping the Law.

.... funny how some Catholics can quote a verse but by training just delete "Jesus" from it.

..... SO conditioned to be obsessed with what self sees in a rose colored mirror, and ignore that One on the Cross

The LAW:

What is the Law?

The Law is the will of God - flowing from His absolute perfection and justice. It is, in essence, that we be as He is - not in terms of essence but character.

Psalm 51:5 "I was sinful at birth"

Genesis 8:21, "Every inclination of man's heart is evil from childhood."

Romans 5:12, "Sin entered the world through one man's sin, and death through sin, and therefore death came to all men for all have sinned."

First John 3:4, "Sin is lawlessness"

Romans 3:12, "There is no one who does good, not even one."

Mark 10:18, "There is none who is good but God exclusively."

First John 1:10, "If we claim we have no sin, we make God a liar and His word is not in us."

What does the Law mandate?

Essentially, that our character be identical to His.

Matthew 5:48, "You must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."

1 Peter 1:16, "You must be holy even as God in heaven is holy."

John 15:12, "Love all people just as I (Jesus) first loved you."

Ephesians 4:32, "forgiving one another, just as God in Christ first forgave you."

First John 2:6, "Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did."

Philippians 2:5, "You must have the same attitude that Christ did."

The word "sin" literally means "to miss the mark." In ancient Greece, if an archer missed the target, the therefore "sinned" because he missed the mark, missed the target. The Bible says "ALL fall short." IF you have absolutely, perfectly, divinely, 24/7 "hit" all the targets above, then you are obedient and free of sin. Otherwise...... Well, the Bible would be correct and not lying when it says that "NO ONE is righteous, no, not even one." "For ALL fall short." "NO ONE is good." "If you claim to have no sin (you hit the mark), then you lie and call God a liar."

The GOSPEL

What is the Gospel?

It is the heart of God, the mercy of God, what God has done FOR us, the gifts from God, the promises of God - all in view of CHRIST alone: the Cross, the Blood, the Empty Tomb.

Galatians 2:21, "If justification were through the Law then Christ died for no purpose."

Philippians 3:9, "Not because of our works, lest anyone can boast."

Romans 3:20, "No human being will be justified in God's sight by works of the Law."

First John 4:10, "Not that we love God but rather that He loves us."

First John 4:8, "God is love."

John 3:16, "For God so (unconditionally) love the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but has everlasting life."

Romans 5:8, "God shows His love for us in that while we were enemies of God, Christ died for us."

First John 2:2, "Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins."

Titus 3:5, "God saves us not because of our deeds of righteousness but rather in view of His own mercy."

Romans 6:23, "The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus."

Ephesians 2:8, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing but rather it is the free gift of God."

John 3:36, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life."

This Gospel also applies to our lives as Christians....

Hebrews 13:5, "I will never leave you or forsake you."

First John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, God is faithful to His promise and will forgive our sins."

.... and so VERY much more.... all entirely because of the heart of God, the unconditional love of God, the mercy of God.... in view of the Lamb, the Blood, the Cross, the Christ, the Savior.

LAW: You NEED The Savior!
GOSPEL: God gave you The Savior!

The Law does not negate or cancel or diminish the Gospel.... nor does the Gospel negate, cancel or diminish the Law... both are real, both are true, both stand in ALL their force and truth... and they can only accomplish their task if we allow them to stand FULLY - not watering them down, not confusing them, not entangling them, not misapplying them. A Christian (one who is justified, narrow - by Christ ALONE, by the SAVIOR, via the Cross, because of the Gospel!) is still called to absolute, total, divine perfection, holiness, obedience, love... still called to always, perfectly HIT THE MARK, right on, every time, 24/7, as much as God does, in our nature, our being, our attitude, our thoughts, our words, our deeds: both for civil reasons AND so that we realize we fail and need Gods' mercy. We strive forward because we love God and because this is the will of God..... but we never fully attain it, we miss the mark, we fall short more often and more greatly than we realize. And so, thanks be to God, the Gospel remains (FULLY, completely, in all its' power and force and beauty): God is merciful, God forgives, because of the Lamb, because of the Cross, because of the Blood, because of His unconditional love, because of His Son, because there is the SAVIOR - Jesus Christ.

When the Holy Spirit lights upon the Law of God, then you see the Spirit of Yeshua in the depths, width, and breath of it. It is hard to pull out weeds if you do not get at the roots of them. So it is with all sins, for they have deep roots, strong stem and branches, and the fruit will come to bear. You may have the cut body off from the roots but the roots will reshoot seven times worse in its shoots. That is why so many struggle. So the next time Yeshua points out the root, just because it is not the same as the deed, doesn't make it any less of a threat to your spiritual life with Him.

I see gospel and Law going together, Christ redeemed us from sin but it is our choice if we stay free or not and only if you are in the spirit does the law not apply to you.

It is like a great big circle where Life is. As long as you remain in that circle, you will have life. It is the line God drew, Yeshua catches those who cross the line and are sorry. So if you are well within the boundaries of the Law, which is where the Spirit leads you, you will find harmony between the Law of God and His Spirit.

It's odd I think that one poster complains that Jesus wasn't mentioned or that some part of the verse was lighted upon rather than the part that says "In Christ Jesus". Another poster wrote about weeds, roots and a seven fold worsening of matters. Yet all that the first post observes is that Romans 8:2 mentions a law that sets one free. Is it so objectionable to some to mention a law that sets free that even the holy scripture passage that says it must be silenced lest it upset a great ship of doctrine riding on some sea of theories about the gospel and law? And ought every mention of the word law create an occasion to advocate for restoring old covenant dietary and cultic regulations? That being as it is It seems like a good time to return to the passage containing the verse quoted in the first post of this thread and ask the good people of CH what they believe the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus to be and how it manages to set you free from the law of sin and of death?

so .........
which one are you going to obey ?
the instructions in the mosaic law

or the instructions in the Good news of Jesus .

the commands of the Old covenant
or the commands of the new covenant ?

you see, there is no escaping obedience.

For Justification we don't obey. Jesus obeyed in our place and we are covered by His righteousness.

For Sanctification, the Holy Spirit works in us, and we obey but some people confuse sanctification with Justification and that's a huge problem!!!

A Father adopts a child. That child is HIS. If the child turns from him, that's the child's doing and he rejects his Father. For the child who obeys, he's already the Father's CHILD. He's not earning his way into that identity. Don't you see? His obeying after being adopted is a result of the Father's love and guidance. It's not earning him a spot.

For justification one is made just and that means being righteous.

There's truth to your statements and yet God sees us as we are too. There is nothing hidden from his sight[SUP]1[/SUP].

1 Sirach 17:1-14 God created man from the earth, and he made him according to his own image. 2 And he returned him again to it, and he clothed him with virtue according to himself. 3 He gave him the number and time of his days, and he gave him authority over all the things that are upon the earth. 4 He placed the fear of him over all flesh, and he had dominion over wild beasts and flying things. 5 He created from him a helper, similar to himself. He gave them counsel, and language, and sight, and hearing, and a heart, in order to think. And he filled them with the discipline of understanding. 6 He created within them the knowledge of the spirit. He filled their heart with understanding, and he showed them both good and evil. 7 He set his eye upon their hearts, to reveal to them the greatness of his works, 8 so that they might highly praise the name of sanctification, and give glory to his wonders, so that they might declare the greatness of his works. 9 In addition, he gave them discipline and the law of life, as their inheritance. 10 He established an eternal covenant with them, and he revealed to them his justice and judgments. 11 And their eye saw the greatness of his honor, and their ears heard the honor of his voice, and he said to them: "Beware of all iniquity." 12 And he commanded each one concerning his neighbor. 13 Their ways are always in his sight; they are not hidden from his eyes. 14 Over each and every people, he has appointed a ruler.

If you love me, keep my commandments..... Yeshua said....

These commandments are the same as His Father's... they are the Ten written in stone to be written in our hearts.

Romans 2:15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

So often people only see the Law as accusing, but sometimes it comes in your defense...In this your conscience has set you free by the Law.

YES, that's why Law and Gospel are both true.

EXACTLY!

But only if they are kept in their truth - full, bold, powerful - not stripped, emptied of everything, watered down with oceans of water, made small (such as "try your best..... try not to ACT on it" or "God helps those who help themselves..... God supplies the juice, you do the work and earn heaven").

Those who oppose Law and Gospel need to both dilute them, strip them - AND confuse them, mix them, blend them, entangle them. All because they oppose both Law and Gospel and because they view God as small and the one they see in the mirror as BIG. Those with an ego the size of Saturn might admit that they (unwillingly) slip up a bit now and then but God gives them the TIME and the HELP they need so that (if they sufficiently use both) they will EVENTUALLY clean up their act and thus go to heaven. But many haters of Law and Gospel have egos the size of Jupiter and thus strip both of everything: "I'M wonderful..... I'VE ceased to sin...... I don't need no God, no Christ, no Savior, no love, no mercy, no forgiveness, no salvation cuz I'M ME, I obey, I keep the Law!" (they justify this because they've made the "Law" so small, so limited that it's an easy bar to jump).

The Law is a curb, guide and mirror. The freedom in following it is because we no longer have to abide by it for our salvation since salvation is given to us due to Christ's death and the forgiveness won at the cross. We are free to live our lives without the burden of having to follow the Law. That's not to say we don't want to follow the law since it's holy and good It shows love to God and to our neighbors when we live by it.
