Under windows 10 and 7 remote access cannot be obtained without changing setting on your operating system to explicitly allow it. Even then a password is needed.

Did you read the TOS and privacy statements that were initially issued with Windows 10? If not, it might be worth the time to read them. I understand they've changed since - but only after public outcry. In any case, it's enough for me to move to a system where there is less chance where my files and my net movements are going to be logged by my own OS.

I believe that there are special web browsers that allow one to access it and there is or was an operating system that looked exactly like windows xp but was in reality a dark net portal.

My first computer was the Amiga. I loved it.

Yep, but it also seems that without a commitment from Microsoft to maintain it and keep malicious software at bay we have to move on from XP to 7 and now to 10.

Not necessarily, I figure they are banking on the masses panicking when they hear "no more support" and rushing to upgrade. And along the way you end up having to upgrade the hardware that won't support the new version, and end up needing multiple gigabytes of memory just to look at the pretty desktop.

I often wonder just how powerful a "junk" computer from, say, 2005 would appear if it were running something like Windows 98.

Just stay smart, use firewalls and don't run stuff you don't know to be safe. As stuff fades away it becomes a less attractive target for hackers.

I won't take Windows 10. Way too unhandy. Don't even know what I have now.

Windows 10 is like a slightly uglier version of windows 7 :)
