The Twilight Lamb

The order of things. Jewish clock on any given day does not start at midnight, but at sunset. Their count of a day also starts at sunset. So the rush to get Yeshua down from the cross and into the grave was all about getting it down before sunset when the Sabbath begins. That year it was not the on the evening of the beginning of Nisan 14 when the Lamb is eaten, but just before nightfall and when Nisan 15 Feast of Unleavened Bread starts.

The Lambs are sacrificed according to timing and the Passover Lamb was sacrificed at twilight. Yeshua is the twilight lamb of the Passover lambs.

Here they are back in Egypt on that night before they leave. They have sacrificed their lamb earlier and are now eating it with their boots on ready to go.

Exodus 12:8 They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it.


Exodus 12:17 And you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day, throughout your generations, as a statute forever. 18 In the first month, from the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 For seven days no leaven is to be found in your houses. If anyone eats what is leavened, that person will be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a sojourner or a native of the land. 20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwelling places you shall eat unleavened bread.”

Leviticus 23:5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the Lord's Passover.

Exodus 29:38 “Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: of fine flour mingled with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil, and a fourth of a hin of wine for a drink offering. 41 The other lamb you shall offer at twilight, and shall offer with it a grain offering and its drink offering, as in the morning, for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord.42 It shall be a regular burnt offering throughout your generations at the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord, where I will meet with you, to speak to you there.

Numbers 28:1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Command the people of Israel and say to them, ‘My offering, of fine flour for of beaten oil. 6 It is a regular burnt offering, which was ordained at Mount Sinai for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord. 7 Its drink offering shall be a quarter of a hin for each lamb. In the Holy Place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the Lord. 8 The other lamb you shall offer at twilight. Like the grain offering of the morning, and like its drink offering, you shall offer it as a food offering,

The Britannica World Language Dictionary defines twilight as, "The light diffused over the sky from sunset to dark and from dark to sunrise, caused by the reflection of sunlight from the higher portions of the atmosphere; hence, any faint light."

The Passover observance was to begin at a specific time of the day. Leviticus 23:5 and other passages define this time as being "at even" in the KJV, or in the Hebrew, "between the evenings," Leviticus 23:5. The phrase "between the evenings" is from the Hebrew ben ha arbayim. The Pharisees, in accordance with their man-made Talmudic adherence, defined ben ha arbayim as any time from afternoon to sunset. Karaites, Sadducees, and Samaritans, in accordance with the Biblical Torah (law), all interpreted ben ha arbayim as being the time from sunset to complete darkness. By the way, Sadducees were in control of the temple services and its order of events. Pharisee were more in control of the Sanhedrin judicial system.

Exodus 12:6 reads, "And you shall keep it [the Passover sacrifice] up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening" (literally, "between the evenings."). The Pharisees interpreted this as meaning between midafternoon, when the sun’s heat abated, and sunset, whereas the Sadducees took it to mean between sunset and dark" (Interpreter’s One Volume Commentary, note at Ex. 12:6).

"In the evening. Hebrew, between the evenings. From very early days opinions have differed as to the exact time of the sacrifice. The Samaritans and the Karaites construed it as the time between sunset and complete darkness. The Pharisees held to the traditional explanation that it was from the beginning of lengthening shadows to sunset, approximately 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and with this the Talmud agrees" (Wycliffe Bible Commentary, note at Ex. 12:6).

I want you to notice something. This was going to be prophetically fulfilled by Yeshua, so the Lord made sure of the instructions about His "appointed season" according to "all the rites of it" and according to " all the ceremonies".

Numbers 9:3 "In the fourteenth day of this month, at even (between the evenings), you shall keep it [Passover] in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall you keep it"

The Passover cannot start on the thirteenth or go through the fifteenth. Gpd says unequivocally that His Passover is on the fourteenth day of Abib [Nisan]. And ALL rites and ALL ceremonies of the Passover must take place on the 14th. No part of Passover can be on the 15th because the Feast of Unleavened Bread is commanded to be on the 15th day of Abib (Lev. 23).

God's day begins at sunset, and thus the Passover began at sunset. Yeshua and His disciples met just as Nisan 14 day was about to begin for the Last Supper. The next day, Yeshua was on the cross and died "between the evenings" which would be about 3 pm. So while the preparations were being made to eat the Passover on into the Feast of Unleavened Bread, Yeshua was laid to rest.
