actualy wednesday -in english
The name is derived from Old English Wōdnesdæg and Middle English Wednesdei, "day of Woden", ultimately a calque of dies Mercurii "day of Mercury".

and from another source- The name Wednesday derives from two distinct gods. The Old English word for Wednesday indicates that the day was named for the Germanic god Woden. In Romance languages, the name is derived from the Roman god Mercury. (For example, Wednesday is mercredi in French and miercuri in Romanian.) Woden (also known as Odin) and Mercury have been associated since Scandinavian and Roman cultures crossed paths. Under Woden’s supervision, the earth and sky were created from the dead body of a giant named Ymir. Woden also created the first man and woman from an ash tree and an alder. As if fashioning the human race wasn’t enough, Woden also established the laws of the universe.

its just history displaying origin

and thereby displaying it originates fully in paganism and Zero in the one true living God .

What does any of that have to do with what Ash Wednesday means in the church and for Christians? Answer: it has nothing to do with it.

or ..what do these traditions practiced by the church have to do with what the Lord JESUS HAS commanded us to do as his deciples .. ? Answer ": Nothing

they do not originate in god they are not acts following the lord Jesus in obedience to the Holy Spirit they are just people doing what they will and never mind Gods will...

take that into consideration the next time people recite the lord's prayer without actually listening to a word they mumble .

I will tell you something about Ash Wednesday, it has to do with repentance and I know you're a huge proponent of repentance so you should know now that it is not evil.

if it was truly about repentance you would repent of calling it ash wednesday now that you know the origin of the days name .and if you have truly repented you would not have to do so repeatedly year after year proving that repentance has not taken place .repentance is not a temporal state of sorrow . it is a turning away from sin and henceforth walking in obedience .
repentance is not just being sorrow- it is changing and not returning to what we changed from .

Silly.

This seems to be your reaction to anything when it's PROVEN your point is false. In this thread, it has been documented that both your claims in the opening post are simply wrong, false. This practice IS in the Bible... where it is NEVER stated to be wrong, and it dates AT LEAST to 1000 BC, not 1000 AD. You are wrong on BOTH points. You are just wrong - completely wrong - on both points.

Sooooo.... being wrong in your points..... you consistentyly flee to this silly argument of yours, "But we have no proof JESUS did it so it's WRONG!!!!!!" Sometimes you modify this silly apologetic by stating, " It's never illustrated in the pages of the Bible so it's WRONG!!!!"

This you stated by posting on the internet, which of course, you can't prove Jesus ever did... and you can't show is ever illustrated in the Bible. Thus, you yourself are: 1) Proving how SILLY your point is and 2) Condemning yourself.

It's equally silly to argue now that we shouldn't use English words while speaking English - especially since YOU use English words while speaking English. And it's silly to argue that we can't use titles or words not found in the Bible when you do.

You perpetually retreating to these incredibly silly points only weakens your credibility still more. Where are you getting this stuff? Who is so silly to tell you this stuff? Amazing.... Incredible.....

You presented some false ideas of what Ash Wednesday is all about even when others have tried to correct you and that isn't something to be proud of. This thread isn't something to be proud of either and Josiah nailed it.

good grief .. google it for your self -dont make random accusations because you dont like the information .

your all soooo defensive .. wonder why ?
iv simply presented the pagan origin of the practice of Ash wednesday .

your not defending anything scriptural .. just a carnal tradition.

if you were being even remotely scriptural you would sit outside wearing sack cloth eating nothing and throwing dust over your head in humiliation and shame and sorrow for Sin ..

So your thread is on the Pagan version and not the Christian version?

I think if one reads the opening post, it's obviously an attack on the practice of Ash Wednesday. And that is substantiated by the opening posters' later posts in the thread.

But the two points of the OP have been proven wrong.

So..... it seems to me.... the opening poster has simply abandoned all that (rather than admitting error).

There IS a side note about how some of our English words (including Wednesday) have pagan origins.... now OBVIOUSLY that has nothing to do with denominations (and so wasn't the posters' reason to put the post in the Denominations forum.... and obviously all denominations when communicating in English refer to that day by the English word).... but the opening poster has tried to MORPH the post into an entirely different discussion: rebuking denominations and Christians for using English words when speaking English. THAT topic isn't unpermitted of course, it's just silly to try to suggest THAT was THE subject of the thread and the reason why it's in the Denomination Discussion forum.

Yeah, I know.

PS. I had a prof once who commented that when we're holding nothing, it's best to fold and shut up. Not all have learned that. I've learned in apologetics (and life), some - when they have nothing - go to a fall back imaginary "card". They have one or two of these they pull out when it is OBVIOUS they've been called and they have nothing (but don't know to fold and shut up). I think we've seen two common ones: "We can't do something UNLESS it is clearly recorded as having been done in the Bible" (they states this while posting on the internet, LOL.... LOL!), and "We can't use words or titles that aren't found in the Bible!" (of course the word "bible" isn't found there, either). Oh, then there's the dosy of them all: "The Holy Spirit told ME - just ME - and I'm an infallible listener!" Some lay down that imaginary 'card' too. But only when absolutely essential to save face (of course, it does the opposite). Sometime we should learn in life (Nixon, Clinton both proved some never do).... when you're wrong, it's best to admit it. Or at least, shut up.

I did notice the thread emerged immediately after I posted mine about Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is used by Christians for repentance. That's not pagan.

the lord jesus has specificaly stated ..if we love him, we are to folow "his commands "

not our own will or traditions
where does he command the practice of ash wednesday ? he does not .. it is following a carnal minded practice of the world and repainting it . it has nothing to do with the wil of the lord JESUS .. it is simply teaching as doctrine the traditions of men .. something that we are not to do .

If we preach repentance (which is what Ash Wednesday is about), how exactly does that not follow what Jesus desires for us? You're proving here that you know nothing about Ash Wednesday within the church.

and you simply in denial . you know full well the practice of honoring another and false god ,, repainted with christian jargon .. has no place .and is not worshiping God according to HIS will but only according you mans will and tradition .

ash wednesday would only be about repentance of people actually repented .but if they repented then they would have to do so yearly .-the very fact they do it every year displays that know darn well they have not turned away from sin to follow the lord JEsus -they announce thier own guilt over and over .
i see ask smeared on the head
i see no sorrow, no tears ,no crying out to God , no sitting in the dust and throwing ash on your head to humiliate yourselves .. ..and display how regretful any one is for sinning ..almost the opposite -i see people gretting each other "happy ash Wednesday they say " oh such hypocrisy laid bare .
what a loy of hoot it about repentance it is nothing more then a man made carnal tradition .. a practice that originates in paganism and has been white washed to look Christian .

i will stick to doing what the lord Jesus HAS told us to do .
obedience to him is what honors him .not traditions of men made by men for men .

now back to the topic . the topic is about the origin of the custom called "ash Wednesday "..it was around before the roman catholic church existed .so that is not its origin

You cannot see the heart to know who has true repentance. That is God's job. You can't have his job.

straw men are popping up every where lately

......
the practice of Ash wednesday originates from pagan worship -thats a simple fact - get over it.,its not going to change .

some have taken it and repainted it to thier own practice -but God did not instruct us to ever do this . no where in his word does he say

imitate the practices of the world
- rather he says be NOT conformed to the world

it was only included in the rcc about 1000 years ago..
and has no scriptural basis nor direct unambiguous directive .

your defending a non scriptural tradition that has no origin in Godliness -- and your doing so because man taught you to . God didn't .(that should bother you ,as it makes you {by "you " i refer to any reader who practices it } a follower of man instead of a follower of the Lord JEsus - and HE SAID -you cannot serve two masters -. which one do you love the most ?

since we are called to take up the cross and lay down our own lives (relinquish our will in order to do HIS will ) and doing so is our reasonable service of worship to god .. we do best by forsaking such worldly customs -

as it is written

"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.…"

conforming ourselves to the world or the worlds ways to us ..is ,in every manner, carnal in nature and could not be further from "spiritual worship " ,, and also as it is written "those who worship him must do so IN SPIRIT and in truth . not in outward carnal man made world imitating rituals.

You have two arguments:

1. Applying ashes as a sign of repentance dates to no earlier than 1000 years after Jesus. This has been prove to be entirely false (although you've ignored that, perhaps not reading the posts)

2. Applying ashes as a sign of repentance is never mentioned in the Bible. This has been shown to be entirely false (although you've ignored that, perhaps not reading the posts)

Now.... it could be that non-Christians apply ashes for whatever reasons. May be. No one here has disputed that possibility. But you have yet to answer the question SO WHAT? (Perhaps you've just not read those posts; you've admitted you often don't). You are posting on the internet. Do non-Christians post on the internet? Does that make it wrong for you to ALSO post on the internet? You likely drive a car. Do non-Christians also drive cars? Does that make it wrong for you to drive a car? Dio non-Christians sing? Does that make it wrong for you to sing? Do non-Christians eat? Does that make it wrong for you to eat? And if it is wrong to do what non-Christians do, do you condemn all those in the OT who are stated as doing this (but NONE are EVER rebuked in the OT for doing so)? It's just a silly, silly strawman of yours. And thus you always avoid any posts that point this out.

he says be NOT conformed to the world

IF that means we can't do anything that non-Christians do, then stop posting on the internet, stop eating, stop sleeping, stop driving, stop singing, stop watching TV and movies. You're good at creating absurd strawmen that obviously even you don't believe or accept or practice.
