You are Petros and on this petra I will build my church.

Obviously these are two different words. Some have declared that they are the same or have the same meaning. But do they?

If it was the same word why didn't Yeshua say "You are Petros and upon this Petros I build my church"?

For those who are wondering, Greek masculine is petros and the Greek feminine petra,

Isn't the first plural and the second singular? That is my memory without looking it up again.

I've long thought the best interpretation of the statement is that Yeshua is identifying not the person of Peter specifically, but the statement Peter makes as to who is Christ. If the gates of Hades was not to overcome the Rock on which the Church is established, Matt 16:18 then people who accept that the statement was about Peter himself rather than what he said must have trouble in that just a few verses later Yeshua calls Peter Satan based in response to a different statement.

"4074 Pétros (a masculine noun) – properly, a stone (pebble), such as a small rock found along a pathway. 4074/Pétros ("small stone") then stands in contrast to
"4073/pétra ("cliff, boulder," Abbott-Smith).

"4074 (Pétros) is an isolated rock
"4073 (pétra) is a cliff" (TDNT, 3, 100).

"4074 (Pétros) always means a stone . . . such as a man may throw, . . .
"4073 (pétra), a projecting rock,cliff" (S. Zodhiates, Dict).

Now to add more to the controversy... John reads

15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. 16He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 17He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Yeshua isn't calling him Simon Peter or Peter, but Shimon benJonah, and this was after the resurrection. So if Peter's name was changed. It wasn't permanent since Yeshua went back to calling him Simon.

The dialogue in John 21 contains a few mysteries and secrets, but I hadn't noticed this until you explicitly pointed it out. Thank you. It seems the Hebrew root of his name (Shimone) - the name of the man - also doesn't mean "rock", but "heard" - https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?strongs=H8095&t=KJV
