I'd expect to pay more for anything in a big city than in a tiny little diner, and I'd expect to pay more for a shot of Hennessey XO than I would for a glass of iced tea.

We recently went to the Cheesecake Factory and pop (with free refills) was almost $5. That's probably the highest I would ever consider paying.

So this is about twice the price of a large drink at In 'N Out. Yup. BUT you are in a very nice sit-down restaurant... you get your drink delivered to you in a nice glass, not a paper cup that you yourself fill. Same product but a very different context. Oh, and IF you are ordering that "Coke" in a very elite, very nice bar at a 5 star resort, you're probably going to pay twice what Cheesecake Factory does. Context means a lot in pricing. Unless you are at Costco, you are paying not just for the drink but for where you are getting it.

I don't know I'd pay $5 for pop. I routinely pay $7-8 for a craft beer, although I don't drink enough of them for the price to be a problem. On a particularly nice trip I took in about 2001 I ordered the Hennessy XO in the bar overlooking the Niagara Falls. I should probably have checked the price first, it turned out to be $48. It was a good cognac, although I'm glad I didn't order too many of them.

Beer easily goes for 18.00 bucks around here for standard size plastic cup.

I'm surprised you're allowed plastic cups in the People's Democratic Republic of California. I hope they are reusable.

I think you'll pay that kind of money if you go to a sports venue, although I don't go to sports venues so can't say from experience. I have been known to pay $15-20 for a 22oz bottle of beer but only if it's something special. I can't imagine being willing to pay $18 for a regular pint, unless it was something so special I wouldn't need another one for the rest of the evening and even then I can't imagine serving such a beer in a nasty plastic cup.
