I have been following what I found on social media in a forwarded post where it gave the right colors to look for, the webbing and all that. Lately, I've been buying the mini watermelons because it's easier for me to finish since my husband won't eat any of it. I choose one that has some dark yellow on the rind, and larger webbing. They're the sweet ones!

Watermelon thump. Thump it with your thumb and finger and the sound will tell you if it is ripe. The deeper the sound, the riper it is.

Also, check the stem if they still have it. If it is green and hard, then the melon is green also. The more the stem looks ripened, the more ripened the melon.

When I was a kid we would go to the vegetable markets on the side of the road to get a watermelon. When my folks chose a melon, the seller would plug it for us. Cut a small triangle out for us to see if it was what we wanted. And of course I got to eat the plug. Alas, those days are gone.

For me it's easy. If it's green I leave it. If it isn't green I leave it.

I'm not a big lover of watermelon. Too many seeds, and I don't enjoy the flesh enough to bother with it.

Check out the Luling watermelon thump festival in Texas, June 27-30. Attend if possible. Be advised, it will be hotter than hell.

You will learn to love watermelon just to survive.
