A church in Bethlehem, the biblical birthplace of Jesus, is receiving attention for its decision to redesign its Christmas nativity scene to reflect the impact of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Just weeks before Christmas, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, located in the West Bank, unveiled a new display of the nativity scene that shows baby Jesus lying in a manger amid rubble. The imagery symbolizes the destroyed Palestinian communities in Gaza and the ongoing war between Israel and the Hamas terror group, a church official said.

What is your reaction to this Christmas nativity scene?

It's a very powerful image to proclaim that the Savior's birth will still be celebrated, that very same Savior who died on the cross for the sins of the world. No matter what happens in the war, for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have eternal life.

What is your reaction to this Christmas nativity scene?

I don't like it. They should have had it represent the slaughtered Jews of Oct. 7, if they feel they must change it.

It shows me that much of the 'church' is in lock step with the world. Nauseating.

I think that this idea might be okay if done right. As it is, however, this presentation looks essentially like a pile of rubble, period.

The features of the traditional manger scene are so minimized that they look almost absent or else pushed aside as if they are now unimportant.
