The key thing to remember is that as long as remember to unplug things before opening them up you're usually OK (a few things carry hidden surprises), and if you start with a broken appliance the worst that can happen is you end up with a broken appliance. I've learned a lot about fixing stuff from just having a go with things that were headed for landfill. I learned to strip and rebuild a laptop because a friend had two matching laptops that both failed with different problems. He couldn't really afford to replace them but didn't have a lot of choice, so when I said I may be able to turn two dead laptops into one live laptop and one totally trashed laptop he figured he had nothing to lose. In the end I turned them into two working laptops with $50 worth of parts. Had that been a top-end laptop that was nearly new I don't know if I'd have been confident to open it up, but as with everything else you learn a bit at a time.
Interesting things can happen if you work on something that's still plugged in. Don't ask how I know that...

Hi Bill. Tis the season to get drunk for no reason! I have to lay off the booze, I don't like to get out of control. I mean disturb my neighbor who was trying to sleep. I moved the stereo so she shouldn't hear it again. I didn't think I had it on loud but apparently she did. I need prayers to get myself together.

At present my wife and I make jewelry, I do photography, and at some point in the not too distant future I'm going to be looking to shift some clocks and watches. I like mechanical clocks, especially chiming clocks. There were times before we moved that my wife struggled with having so many chiming clocks (midnight was fun in our house). Since we moved I bought one working clock but have yet to really get the house filled with them. Most of them sit in the basement for now.
