How do you typically react when someone apologizes to you?

What matters in their apology?

"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." - Matthew 6:14.
I try to live by this.

I try to remember to specifically say, "I forgive you." Rather than "that's okay" But sometimes I mess this up.

If I'm not careful I may do that too.

Just about any wording they use is okay with me and I try to receive it graciously. That's partially because so many people these days would rather choke than offer any apology.

There isn't really a "typical" because there isn't really a typical situation. If someone has the grace to offer an apology I try and show grace to accept it.

What I'm looking for is an apology for what they have done - "I'm sorry I did that / said that" accepts that they did or said something they shouldn't have. Something like "I'm sorry you feel that way" isn't really an apology.

Typically when someone apologizes to me, they don't really mean it. They just say it because they feel they are supposed to say it.

So, typically, when they apologize, nothing matters to me in their apology.

I've had people come up, after doing or saying something, and say they are so sorry. I tell them, don't be sorry. Just don't do it. If you're sorry for it, let that be a lesson. Don't do it.

You don't need my forgiveness to learn not to do it.

On rare occasions where someone is really sorry and sincere, I recognize it, and of course let them know, it is no problem.
