Should social media platforms be allowed to censor content, and if so, how?

This is a tricky one.

One argument is that they are private companies and can make their own rules. The other is that since they have effectively become the modern equivalent of "the public square" that they should be treated differently.

It's hard to see how they can claim to be a passive provider of content and therefore deserving of protection if that content breaks rules, while also censoring content they dislike.

They are private concerns, and there is little that can be done. It's clear, though, that most of the well-known ones are today simply mouthpieces for one or another political cause or organization.

If this were commerce or manufacturing, there would be some means of regulating them. However, we're talking about speech, and that has been governed by the First Amendment until now.
