What is the etiquette for leaving money for groceries when you are staying for a week as a guest in someone else's house? How much is appropriate?

It's impossible to come up with a simple figure to say how much is appropriate.

If your hosts are cooking steak and lobster every night it costs a lot more than if you're eating out every night.

Sometimes other dynamics come into play. My wife and I have a couple of good friends and we sometimes visit each other for a week or two at a time. Many evenings we go out somewhere and either pay our own way or take turns to pick up the check. If we eat in it's usually something simple. We don't specifically leave money for each other because we reciprocate, although it's pretty standard with us for whoever is staying to take some kind of token gift and to take the hosting couple out for a nice dinner towards the end of the stay.
