It looks like DeSantis is going to declare his candidacy today on a twitter spaces audio feed with Elon Musk.

Will you be supporting his campaign with either money or time?

I'm considering doing both. But honestly, he is not my first choice. If Haley or Scott had any chance to win the nomination I would support one of them. I think both are "conservative enough" and would have a much greater chance of winning the general election if they had a unified Republican party behind them.

I'm not sold completely on DeSantis, his feud with Disney just seems unnecessary. However, he is the best chance, at this time, of keeping Trump away from the Republican nomination. At this point, that is my number 1 priority. So I will probably be donating a small amount to his campaign and at least get a bumper sticker for my car. If he runs a good campaign and completely wins me over then I will do more in the runup to the primaries. . If he starts acting like a nut then I'll jump to either Haley or Scott or maybe just sit this one out.

I saw him on Dutch tv yesterday. They said even Trump was better.

Depends on your definition of better.

DeSantis is a much better speaker and does a much better job of explaining why he does what he does. Trump tends to get distracted and personally attack people.

However, DeSantis has been on an "anti-woke" campaign that drives the left in the USA nuts. I think this is a deliberate tactic to try and show he can out Trump, Trump, on social issues.

I'm sorry to have anyone 'sit it out,' but your assessment of the candidates' chances seems solid.

I agree....

I didn't vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020 - and will not this time, in the primaries or general elections.

I like Tim Scott but at this point, he doesn't seem to have any chance of getting the nomination. I sincerely doubt that DeSantis does either, I think Trump's got it. To NOT get the nomination, Trump would either need to die or perhaps be in jail (and even then...). There's almost a cult following around him as a person. It has nothing to do with his views (since all but Chaney share the same views - often more consistently and thoughtfully than Trump) but his following doesn't seem to care about that, their passion is over a man. I've never understood that. But I very much suspect he'll be the Republican nominee and we'll lose again. And he'll run again in 2028, claiming he actually won in 2024.

Probably not, but as many observers have said, some of the candidates in this race really are attempting to look promising enough to be chosen as the VP nominee.

That's probably right. Still, the campaign season has become longer and longer lately. I remember when announcing in December of the year preceding Election Day was thought to be really early. Now we are half a year before that...and the candidates are announcing--or announcing that they might announce--on what seems like a daily basis. A lot can happen between now and the convention that no one is even thinking of at present.

I'm in Alabama and, just talking to folks, I think DeSantis has an opening in Alabama. We border Florida and I know a bunch of folks who have soured on Trump. We are super Tuesday State (March 5th) so my vote/support in the primaries may actually matter this year.

Normally I don't really care who wins the nomination as one Republican is pretty much the same as the other. (Democrats as well). Trump is the exception to that rule. And not in a good way.

Now you've got my curiosity up. Is it Trump being the only president in recent memory not to get us into a new foreign war, or him having forced a re-negotiation of the Mexico-Canada-USA trade agreement (NAFTA) to our benefit, or his tireless efforts at securing the southern border, or maybe his successful demand that our European allies pay something more like their fair share towards our mutual defense, or using his influence to get four treaties signed between Israel and her Middle Eastern adversaries? Maybe it's something else.

It is his being a bully, insulting, and overall attitude. It is also being so dislikeable that he lost re-election in 2020 and dragged down the party in 2022 causing the Republicans to underperform in the mid-terms.

I think any of the Republican candidates in 2016 would have gotten as many good things done than Trump. The only landmark legislation he signed was the Tax cut, which any Republican President would have accomplished. He gave us good SCOTUS nominees but I believe any Republican President would have given us good SCOTUS nominees. Any Republican president would have more or less accomplished what Trump did as President. But did it with more class and dignity and would have been easily re-elected in 2020.

There are two main reasons Trump lost re-election. One was Democrats mining votes in urban areas because of mail-in/drop off ballots. The other was that democrats hated Trump (more than usual hatred for a Republican) and turned out in record numbers just to vote against him. A likeable candidate could overcome the hatred half of the equation. Which would have probably given him/her the victory in 2020.

Ultimately, my beef with him is not on policy, It is on temperament. That is why DeSantis is intriguing. He is similar to Trump on policy but has a better (at least appears better) temperament. He also has a good record in Florida for getting things done. And I just think he is smarter than Trump.

He doesn't swallow the slings and arrows directed at him by people he's helped, I know, and maybe that is a failing on his part. Trump is sarcastic...and that can be irritating to people who, on the other hand, admire pols who prefer to call their opponents Nazis and "Russian assets" or the like. That's true all right.

But how about making a comparison. Let's see who we can point to as a paragon of virtue. Clinton--either one? Pelosi? Schumer? Obama? Christie? McCain? Cheney (father or daughter)? AOC?

Now I think I'm being punked. Good one, Lanman. Have a nice day.

I always liked Carter. Maybe he can come back.

He can make it but it doesn't mean he gonna be a great president, really Biden messed up the only thing that will tell us good things are coming. If Putin Goes, if he goes then things wil get fix but if Putin stays 4 years another Biden era regardless Republican or Democrat.

With a long way still to go until the first primaries, it is beginning to look as though frustration has taken a toll on some of the challengers to Trump. As far as their hopes are concerned, things couldn't have gone worse for them lately, with Trump gaining strength despite that business of his ego that is so often mentioned.

The party as a whole has been forced to rally around Trump now that 78 indictments have been filed against him (with more coming). It's apparent to most Republicans and Independents that this turn of events is just politics and election interference, so Trump has been the gainer for that reason.

What's more, he's shown renewed energy, fighting back while speaking almost constantly to record crowds wherever he goes. What a contrast that makes with Biden! And, by the way, with Pence and DeSantis as well.

So these are the candidates who are on the "down" slope: DeSantis, Pence, and Christie.

And why? Because each of them took some bad advice and decided to go with the Democrat and Mainstream Media script so far as the charges in these indictments are concerned. Well, they probably thought it was worth a try. But meanwhile, the rank and file of their own party have moved more strongly behind Trump because of the perceived injustice done to him and to our country.

People don't like injustice and they see that Biden has nothing happening to him; nothing from the media and nothing from the DOJ, despite growing evidence that he's been doing some illegal things. It could be that the US is sick of this, so if that means electing someone who is strong enough and also wants to right some wrongs in office, then that's probably the guy we need to hire. Drain the swamp, it's festering.

If Trump gets past the phony balony, I think he's a shoe-in. That's a big if, as he's facing the cabal of governments, industry leaders, and banks.
The first time Trump ran, we prayed like our lives depended on it. He got in. The next election and two midterms, I heard lots about red waves, but not much about prayer. I include myself in this. I think the results speak for themselves.
DeSantis and Pence will be little more than footnotes in history.
