What a broad question.
I think religions are formed because:
1. They are true
2. They contain truths that are recognized but also errors.
3. They serve a purpose in uniting people
4. They serve a purpose in enslaving people
5. They are built on truth but are twisted to serve both points 3 and 4 for the benefit of an upper class, usually a priest class.
I think the Jewish religion is an example of points 2-5. It contains truths and errors. It united people, but also enslaved them into a sacrificial system that was never intended but benefited the priest class.
A similar religion might be one of the offshoots of Christianity called Mormonism. Similar in the sense that it adheres to points 2-5, built on some truths and lies, and benefits the priest class/rulers of this particular brand of nominal Jesus religions.
Biblical Christianity itself fits also here, depending on how it's interpreted. Most Christians are Pauline Christians and also believe Peter wrote 1st and 2nd Peter. These books contain numerous references to either obeying earthly authorities/obeying the King as the servant(s) of God. Such blind obedience is a sign of false religion in my opinion.
Scientism is also a form of religion. It used to be about making a hypothesis about something and then setting out to prove it while leaving itself open to disproving itself if any assumptions about the hypothesis or the methods were used. Now, most people just believe whatever "science" (and it's prophets) proclaim. If a "scientist" says something, it must be so, because he or she has the authority of Scientific thought or Scientific opinion that is above mere mortals ability to comprehend. Here are some complicated math equations to befuddle you. Now shush and just accept our conclusions.
