A surprise in my shoe

Earlier today, I took off my shoe that I had had on for about 5 hours, and when I did, I noticed a large dark brown thing sitting on my sock on the top of my foot. I figured it was a piece of leaf or other vegetable matter I had picked up outside, so I poked at it with my finger to remove it. The brown thing began to move and when I looked more closely, I could see it was a scorpion!

It was a Florida Bark Scorpion:

Instinctively I flung it off my foot, but then realized I wanted to know where it was so I could kill it. Well the carpeting is a dark brownish color, and even with a bright flashlight I never could find it.

I am very lucky it never managed to sting me while it was trapped inside my shoe. :yikes:

I've only been stung by a scorpion once...years ago when I worked on a cattle ranch I put my elbow on a fence post, right on top of a scorpion, and it got me. It was worse than a wasp for sure.

I am glad you didn't get stung. I have never seen a scorpion, just pictures.

It is the humidity, the alligators, the misquitos that can carry you away, and the cockroachs that are everywhere

The humidity is oppressive for sure. Gators don't bother me, in fact I have several that live in my pond. Some say our state bird should be the mosquito...and we have huge cockroaches that can fly...called "palmetto bugs." The first time I saw one fly I was flabbergasted.

Reminds me of my boy scout days and all those hikes as a teen..... up, had to CAREFULLY shake out the boots and sleeping bag cuz you never knew what might have crawled in!

I used to get earwigs in my shoes. HATED those but would rather have those then that. Ekk! :eyecrazy:
