I rarely go on long car rides, but when I do, we don't usually use any gadgets to pass the time. We just chat or sit in silence and look out the window.

That's what we did too, mostly look out the window. Occasionally you'd hear someone say "Cow!" and we'd all look at the cow. My dad was good at spotting interesting birds to point out to us.

I'm assuming you're talking about passing the time as a passenger - usually on a long car ride I'm passing the time by looking at the road so I don't drive into anything :)

As a child I'd take a book or play games with license plates or sleep. As an adult sometimes I'll sleep in the car, or help navigate if needed. It's rare that I'm a passenger in a vehicle on a long drive, the vast majority of the time I'm the driver.

Listen to music and that is in an earbud (single mono bud) if there are passengers.

Work math problems in my head, usually related to some topic I am interested in.

With bonus points for spying something that passed fleetingly, giving other passengers virtually no chance of ever guessing just what it was you spied :)

Listen to music (headphones if it wasn't agreed to by others) and read books.
