What do you think about NASA returning to the moon after 50 years?

I think that more technology will come because of it, just like the last time we went to the moon.

I'm okay going back to the Moon....

But the REASON for this is not particularly scientific but part of the mission to Mars. I'm very much against that. I have several reasons:

+ When humans are involved, there is the possibility of cross contamination. We could accidentally introduce life forms to Mars potentially having an enormous impact; worse this could destroy life that exists there. Worse it could impact life here via returning humans. I admit the chance of this is not large but it exists and the potential for enormous harm is real. And there is just NO WAY to eliminate this possibility.

+ Any trip to Mars would need to be very short. Humans don't deal well with low gravity and any trip to Mars would likely need to be kept short, perhaps no more than 6 months on that planet. While we could plant a US flag there and pat ourselves on the back for doing this, it really would have very little practical impact.

+ We can do MUCH more science for MUCH less cost with instrumentation and robotics. And without risking human lives and perhaps permanently harming human beings and with no biological contamination of life. And development of robotics (rather than humans in space) would have MUCH greater possibilities for real life earthly applications. A continuous flow of robotic missions could reveal far more than a handful of very restricted humans (who likely would be doing nothing more than running robotics anyway). This would be FAR less expensive and much safer and would yield far more information.

IMO, the ONLY thing driving this dangerous and expensive effort to put a man on Mars is purely egotistic and political... it has little to nothing to do with science.

Well, this dangerous mission just got scrubbed because of engine failure. This mission has been scrubbed so many times and is way past it's original date of taking off.

The U.S., due to it's abandonment of the space programe, no longer has the skills, or confidence, or courage, to commit.

The U.S. rode the Russian rockets for years into space. But then once we got at odds with the Russians again, the Russians said next time you want to go to space, get a trampoline.

What a disgrace.

It could be cool to have some kind of robot on the surface of the moon that could send back pictures regularly, perform its assorted analyses of rock samples and whatever else might be of interest there.

You never know, maybe if we sent one to Mars we could get some real life pictures of Marvin the Martian and figure out how his spaceship works.

What a laugh. The U.S. today is African and minority driven. So we fall by the way. And everyone wonders why.

(Ps. 12:8) 'The wicked walk on ev ery side, when the vilest men are exalted.'

The U.S. is now under the curse of God. We exalt the evil people.

That is a very racist post. We've had black women working at NASA who helped lead us in the space race.

The space race against who? Or against what?

Well, my recollection is that back in the 1960s there was this perceived competition for who would get to the moon first, USA or USSR. but I could be wrong.

No, you're correct. It was during the cold war and we wanted to prove ourselves as country. What happened was that we discovered new technology that wasn't just useful in trips to space and the moon, but technologies that were brought into the every day home. It's incredible the breakthroughs they created.

At least some of the theories revolving around the moon landing being a hoax are based on the premise that the USA needed to get to the moon before the USSR in order to tip the balance of power in the Cold War, and that by staging the hoax they gained the edge when the Soviets actually had better technology.

I remember a few memes floating about from many years ago that talked of how regular pens didn't write in space, so NASA spent a fortune designing a pen that would write upside down, in space, underwater etc, while the Soviets used a pencil.

I'm aware. I'm just guiding this discussion through questions to make a point. Do you think that nations competing against each other, cold wars and that kind of stuff, is something pleasing to God?

I can't answer that, but would say it probably depends on a lot of factors. I know that in the Old Testament we have events where it presumably pleased God to send his chosen people in to slaughter other nations. If two nations compete and one is ostensibly Christian and the other atheist, well maybe there is something about it that pleases God.

Yes it is pleasing to God when viewed from Him after the fall of Adam and Eve. Competion and wars come as a result of sin and thus you have the divisions God has set.

God divided the earth. (Gen. 10:25)

God divided the nations. (Gen. 10:32)

God divided the races of man. (Gen. 9:24-27)

God divided man by languages. (Gen. 11:1-9)

And you have the natural division of those who are God's people and those who are not. (Luke 12:49-53) (John 8:47) (John 10:26)

Any peace and harmony and unity of fallen man is an abomination to God. The only peace, and harmony, and unity, of man that pleases God, is that which is based upon Him. All other is a pseudo harmony, a pseudo peace, and a pseudo unity. It is a unity against God.

I'm not sure the leadership of the US and USSR really cared much about that question at the time. Probably still don't care much about it.

The mission was scrubbed again and again. Due to what? Fuel leaks they say.

Well, fix it.

No, they can't. They will try and reschedule for monday Sept. 5.

Like that is going to happen.

I guess those black women arn't doing to well...are they?

Better give those astronauts flying this mission, if it ever flies, an extra pair of shorts. Who in the world would want to fly this rocket?

"Come fly with me....and die with me"

The curse is on us. As the Russians said...get a trampoline.

I just read where there are no live astronauts going up in Artemis 1. Just dummies. That's classic.

Seems these dummies are loaded with sensors to determine the affects of space upon the human body. What? Didn't anyone take notes all those years we successfully sent people into space?

In 1968 we sent three men up who orbited the moon in Apollo 8 ten times. Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders.

Artemis 1 launch now pushed back to later September or October. In every way we are going backwards.

So they want to use the moon as a jumping off point for a trip to Mars. Huge waste of taxpayer money.
