What are your strategies for all-you-can-eat buffets to get your moneys worth?

I avoid them. Quantity does not trump quality.

I don't tend to go to them any more.

When I did I'd figure out which dishes I enjoyed most and keep filling up on those. That usually meant lots of meat, when I thought of them as "all you can eat" rather than "all you want to eat".

I wouldn't say I'd never go to an AYCE buffet but these days I'm more interested in quality rather than gorging on insane quantities of junk.

Went to an all-you-can-eat that was raved about by the local Pennsylvanians (The Shady Maple) and found out it would be over $20 a head (probably closer to $25 as I recall). I asked if there was somewhere we could just get a basic meal, and were told the cafe in the basement. We proceeded down the steps and got a wonderful meal for about $10 each and we really were full with that much. We liked the basement cafe so much we went back two more times during this brief vacation (stayed in the area maybe 5 days). The basement also had dozens of gift shops with all sorts of unique and useful items in an open area layout where one could easily shop for an hour or more.

Anything you have or can eat at home, don't eat it at the buffet. Try a little of everything and avoid bread, potatoes and rice.

Eh...unless there was a delux vegan menu with all kinds of interesting dishes (that's like, never)...it's a total waste of $$. The bread is white, usually, and so is the rice...so I'm not going to feel satisfied unless there's some tasty beans to put on it, or potatoes. The vast majority of such places don't offer enough to satisfy me - and no, salad is not enough.
