Butter and olive oil for onions and don't let them burn...let them turn yellow and they'll be nice and sweet. My mom used to just burn the onions pretty much and I never learned how to properly prepare them until I married into an Italian family and watched the ladies do it right. It totally makes the meal taste better when you get the onions done right.

Cook your vegetables in a baking dish in the oven instead of stovetop. I find they taste much better this way.

Get a good knife and keep it sharp. It’ll make cooking much more enjoyable and you’ll actually be less likely to cut yourself.

Also: Clean as you go. Don’t just leave everything until the end.
