I just bought 6 l (1.5 US gallons) of hand sanitiser for AUD 20.00. How much does hand sanitiser cost in the USA?

You must do a lot of hand shaking :D

I see on Amazon that 64 fl oz is available for about $23 as a refill. I still have 4 bottles of 8 fl oz in the basement that I bought 2 years ago. I only use it after I go grocery shopping.

No idea because I have not used hand sanitizer in two years.

No idea. I used it a couple of times during the pandemic but soon figured it was largely symbolic.

No idea. I use soap and water if I have to wash my hands.

I like hand sanitiser, I use it frequently every day. I even use it as a kind of after shaving face cleaner.

I can't stand the stuff. I've never liked it, the only times I'll ever use it is if there really is no other option (and in most circumstances simply accepting my hands aren't clean and acting accordingly is a preferable option). If I need to wash my hands I'd rather use soap and water.

Hoe dreadfully 18th century of you!

Perhaps, but it works.

It's not actually that difficult to keep a mental note of whether each hand is clean or not, and restrict less clean activity to one hand as far as possible. I've been doing it for years when spending extended time outside, where it's good to know whether either hand is clean when it comes to eating. If neither hand is clean I know I need to be more careful to hold my food through whatever it's wrapped in, but if I have at least one clean hand I don't need to worry so much.

I used the same kind of approach during the COVID silliness. There's no point wiping everything with cleaning supplies unless you're going to wipe absolutely everything. So the posturing with wiping the handles of shopping carts was pointless because you know very well that the items on the shelves aren't going to be wiped down. Better to take responsibility for yourself rather than always assuming Someone Else has covered all the bases. So if you touch the shopping cart the hand(s) that touched it are now unclean. Because your hands are unclean you don't rub your eyes etc or eat with them until they are clean again.

Such simple advice, yet there were some who took it to the extreme of wearing latex gloves to shop.

Latex gloves only work within their own limitations, and so many people lack basic understanding of what protection they offer. It's all well and good to use gloves but if you touch something the outside of your gloves is now contaminated, so if you touch your face you gained nothing by wearing the gloves.

At our church we were giving away lunches to families with school age children. Some people wore gloves when handing them out. I didn't bother because I figured if my hands were contaminated I'd contaminate the handle on the outside door when I opened it and then contaminate the outside of the gloves as soon as I opened the door to let myself back in. From there the contaminated outside of my gloves offer no protection to anybody. I can protect myself by washing my hands as and when it suits me.

Other times I saw people wearing gloves but then handling things that weren't clean, while still acting as if their gloves would magically remain sterile. I guess that's what happens when you get simplistic words presented as considered wisdom from talking heads on TV.
