Geology, astrophysics, and the second law of thermodynamics, or science plays no role in answering the 'why' question. All they can do is investigate the physical, and with incomplete knowledge offer some assumptions on what is. They are void of any ability to answer 'why', though they like to.
Science doesn't know how the earth came into existance, though it likes to speak as an authority on the subject. It has no idea as to when the earth came into existance. But, millions and millions of years are needed for it's theory of evolution, so it must have been millions of years ago. Science will always find answers to support it's theories and assumptions. It's faith.
I enjoy watching the PBS show 'earthrise' which comes on now and then. It shows the astronauts of various space missions and their quest to land on the moon. And, many of these astronauts are not Christian, but of course some are. But all are struck with the emptiness, and loneliness of space with all it's lifeless planets. And when they view the earth from space with it's colors, it stands alone as a blue dot on a canvas of black desolation.
Science can observe this creation, but cannot reach the answers of the why of it. I remember the quote from Carl Sagen, a well known scientist, taken I believe in the 70's. I don't have it at hand but I remember the gist of it. Someone had asked him if he believed it were possible that life could be found in outer space somewhere like it is found on earth?
Sagen was no Christian. But he was an honest scientist in answering this question. He said, no. Why? Because he knew the many, many, exact things that must occur and then maintain for another earth to support life. Because he knew the many many things that must have occured to an exact measure for the earth and life to exist as it does. And these were so astounding to him, that he could not imagine it ever occuring again.
Sort of sad. Sagen's scientific knowledge brought him to the very threshold of faith in God, but it could not bring him in. I wonder if he ever thought about his answer of 'no'. For, if one believes it could never happen again, then one must believe it never could have just happened in the first place. An impossibility.
Only God has the answers of 'why' concerning the creation. And they are only found in His written Word, the Bible.
