Attorney defends actions of fired school officer

Life lesson without it ending violently.

But the lesson is that one spoiled brat gets to disrupt everybody else's class just because they don't feel like obeying the rules.

How are children supposed to grow into useful members of society if all they learn in school is that they can do what they like and there are no consequences? Sooner or later there have to be consequences, and if all attempts at reason fail then sooner or later force is applied.

Fired for doing his job by a Sheriff who buckled under political pressure. Deputy Fields was called into a situation where teachers and school administrators where he worked requested that he physically remove an unruly and disruptive student from class. Deputy Fields, after politely asking the student get up and leave, used the force necessary to remove the student from the classroom, while she punched and resisted him. Maybe if we had more people like him, more teenagers would learn the meaning of respect and discipline in school. Deputy Ben Fields should be given an award for doing what was asked of him and teaching a young, rebellious troublemaker a life lesson in respect. Instead, he is without a job and has likely lost his career in law enforcement because of one unruly brat, one spineless sheriff, and millions of people who turn disobedient, disrespectful teenagers into victims. Maybe we can show them there are millions of people who support discipline in schools. Like and share if you support Deputy Ben Fields.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A group of South Carolina high school students has staged a brief, peaceful walkout in support of a sheriff's deputy who was fired after being recorded on video flipping a disruptive student out of her desk and tossing her across the classroom floor.

Local news media outlets quote Spring Valley High School Principal Jeff Temoney as saying that approximately 100 students gathered in the school's atrium Friday to back former Richland County deputy Ben Fields.

I like the think those that abuse their position are the exception and not the rule. I think most are truly dedicated "to protect and to serve."

Many times, they are called upon to make life and death decisions in a split second, and when the consequences are less than desirable and more and more caught on video, then we as a society leisurely lean back and pick apart their decisions from the comfort of our homes.

They are held to a higher standard, as they should be, but we also need to remember they are, after all, only human.

The officer could have told the principle that unless the child has broken the law, this would be an internal matter and that maybe the parents or guardians should be called in.

They are held to a higher standard, as they should be, but we also need to remember they are, after all, only human.

They are, and when they are put in a situation where whatever they do is going to be wrong by some standard that might be applied (even reasonably applied) we shouldn't be surprised when someone is unhappy at the outcome.

In a case like this just what is supposed to happen to a teenager who refuses to abide by the rules? If she gets away with brazenly ignoring the rules all that teaches everybody is that obeying rules is optional. If she's asked to leave and refuses, sooner or later it becomes a matter where law enforcement does have a reasonable role in removing her, and once the police are present what are they supposed to do? If they talk to her and she still refuses to move then she gets to think that she is untouchable. If they apply any force there's the chance that it will end badly. And, as you say, the cop has to make a decision in a split second while those clearing up afterwards get to take as long as they want to consider what other options might have been available.

If a cop has truly gotten power crazed and is acting totally out of line then they need to be reined in and, if necessary, disciplined or fired (or jailed, depending on the severity). If they've made a single bad judgment call, or just done the best they could in a situation where ultimately they were going to take flak however it turned out, career-ending sanctions seem to achieve little other than driving otherwise good cops out of the business.

So I keep coming back to this thread...and I wonder if the student had been male instead of female how would I feel? Would I think he maybe deserved it more? Now, I'm not talking race at all, but the sex of the student.

As a former sub, I can tell you that boys were probably 99% of the trouble makers in classes. I knew that a lot of them just wanted my attention and soon learned that if I gave them my full undivided attention for the first 5 minutes before class that they'd behave better throughout the rest of it. I don't know why, but it worked and took me a year and a half to figure it out! LOL

So, what if it had been a boy? Would the media react the same?

We can only speculate but I would bet that if the student had been white it would have been different, if the student had been male it would probably have been different. As always the media pushes whatever agenda they want to push and present things in the way required to push their agenda.
