My workout was more of a washout. I think I slightly twisted my ankle climbing up and down the ladder so many times - I found the warmup much harder than I should have done and as soon as I started to run my ankle started to hurt. So I stopped the workout and did a gentle jog instead, but even that was much harder than it should have been. I guess it was just an off day, they happen. I rescheduled the workout for tomorrow.

My wife is happy with the new location for the light on the porch, so I get to run some more cables to power the other light points. Whoever put the existing lights in didn't bother with little niceties like junction boxes, they just drilled a hole through a beam and screwed a bar to the beam. Aside from not complying with current code requirements it works, at least until you want to connect multiple lights together. Since I'm replacing the work I need to comply as far as is possible with current code, which means junction boxes. And junction boxes can't be in the same space as beams. You can get boxes that fit around beams but these beams date back to when 2x4 actually meant 2x4 and not 1.5x3.5, so the boxes designed to go either side of a beam won't fit anyway. That means I need to drill holes in the ceiling that line up with each other as well as possible, while also considering where they can go relative to the beams. And of course the beams make it harder to feed cables because it's not a simple matter of running a fish tape through a space.

But before that I want to do my workout. I don't want to find joints twinging because I went from climbing ladders to running. I can also get my wife to help me, even if that just means holding a reel of cable to stop it twisting while I feed it from point to point. My wife has a scheduled workout today so we can do them kinda sorta together. They are quite different but I can do my speed repeats back and forth along the same stretch while she jogs back and forth. There's a quiet stretch of road near here that's about 3/4 mile, which is enough for my purposes and long enough that she isn't spending more time turning around than jogging.

I got my workout in today. My legs still weren't feeling quite right during the walk to where I start the actual workout but I decided to use the warmup time to jog gently and see how things went. This workout was demanding, the speed repeats left me feeling progressively more drained but I managed to maintain the pace, even if only just, for each of them.

Now it's time for a hot drink. I have another workout scheduled for tomorrow but I might kick that out to Saturday depending on how my legs are doing tomorrow. Tomorrow includes a one-mile run to provide a time baseline, as well as four goal pace repeats that involve running half a mile at my goal pace interspersed with three-minute recovery walks. Hopefully my mile run will give me some good baseline figures I can use to project how well I'm measuring up against my goal - my one-mile personal best time is largely irrelevant for that because it covers a section that is mostly downhill.

I had another scheduled workout today. Normally I have at least one rest day between them but because I rescheduled Wednesday's I didn't. I could have rescheduled today's bt the weather for the next three days isn't looking good so I decided to just get on with it. Two sets of speed repeats on two consecutive days maybe wasn't the smartest thing to do but I got through it all without killing myself. Today's workout included a "fast mile" where the idea is to run a mile at a challenging pace but without sprinting. I think I get one of those every two weeks and part of the idea is to try and beat the previous time. Because of the hills around here I've been trying to do the fast mile on the same section of road so it's not artificially distorted by hills - there's a section not far from here where I can find almost an entire mile of gentle downhill gradient, so a mile along there wouldn't give an accurate indication of my fitness.

Now I'm sitting in my recliner waiting for my coffee to brew.

I had planned a rest day for today but my wife has a workout so I may go along with her. Although it's not technically a rest day it's a lot easier than my regular scheduled workouts. It might be good for my legs to take in some movement but without anything too heavy. Before that we're going to visit a local craft show. If it's any good we might look to sell some stuff there next year.

The craft show was a complete waste of time. There weren't all that many vendors in the space and most of it was just endless "same old, same old". In one of the rooms we literally walked in, scanned the selection from within 20 feet of the entrance, and walked right on out again. And then were the armies of mobile obstacles - the people who want to walk at a glacial pace but also want to make absolutely certain they are blocking as much of a corridor as possible.

The acoustics of the rooms were bad, they seemed unduly noisy. As if that wasn't enough they decided to have a local school band playing. It was a shame - the band sounded like they were reasonably good but it just didn't work on top of all the other noise. We probably lasted half an hour in total before we were both ready to leave.

Needless to say we won't be going back next year.

Oh wow, the craft show we went to was a bomb too! There were probably only 20 vendors and it was the same seasoning packets for sale, candles, wood products, books, crocheted items, ornaments. Nothing new and unique. I couldn't even find any pet items.

Craft shows haven't been the same for a while now. Ever since the explosion of direct sales and endless "independent consultants" they turn into little more than endless clones. There's no point going to a "craft" show when most of the vendors are direct sales, and it makes it ever-harder for the real crafters to sell much when they are competing against identikit garbage produced in a Chinese sweat shop.

And then come the endless "primitive" items, where people pay top dollar for stuff that looks like it was made by the kindergarten class.

There are more craft shows today but do I dare go to any more and get disappointed again?

I'm not overly averse to trying out new shows as long as they aren't too far from home. As a rule I'm not interested in a long drive to a show simply because so many of them are nothing more than variations of the "Paparazzi rep, Origami Owl rep, Usborne Books rep, Pink Zebra rep, Scentsy rep, etc etc etc etc".

The ones that specifically don't allow direct sales reps are worth a look but they seem to be getting ever-rarer. The organisers have to fill the spaces somehow and if they can't find crafters (hardly surprising, given how hard it is to sell much when you're competing with Chinese sweat shops) they need to look elsewhere and in the process make it harder still to find crafters.

More wrecking. I've managed to expose a joint between two walls and it's not a very pretty sight. I could feel something of a draft coming from behind a corner and now I've got a better handle on why. I also found a few more air gaps right through the wall. I'm going to finish my coffee and then go see to fixing some stuff. It's far too cold and windy to be running outside but I might just wrap up and go for a walk.
