“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”
-Revelation 3:18

Is this scripture verse telling me to buy Dogecoin?

Also, what does it mean when it says to put salve on my eyes to see? Is it talking about smearing gall bladder from a fish on my eyes?

If God is selling it, buy it. If He’s not, don’t

I would be hesitant to build theology on single verses. It's the quickest path to error that you can find. The book of Revelation is a book of profound imagery and symbolism and shouldn't be taken literally.

Revelation 3:14-22 is an entire letter to the church of Laodicea and should be taken as a whole piece rather then individual verses much like you would a parable.

This link greatly explains the verse you highlighted that might be of interest to you...

If anything I'd have said that verse, suitably wrenched out of context as you've done here, would be telling you to buy actual gold rather than things that are generally yellowish and shiny.

A word of advice, if you're going to rip something out of context to make it say something the original text never intended, it's best to take as small a fragment of Scripture as possible. Here you've made the fatal mistake of quoting at least most of a verse.

===================================================================================

This is just to expand a little on thoughts already offered by others.

===================================================================================

In the letters to the nominated churches in Revelation, notable characteristics of each city were used as illustrations of the problems that were plaguing that city (problems possibly unrecognised by its inhabitants). The Laodiceans were thus addressed in terms that struck home to them. Reviewing Reveleation 3:15-18:

15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would that you were cold or hot.
16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

The water supply of Laodicea is documented as originating at a hot spring at some distance from the city. By the time the water reached the city, the temperature had dropped to lukewarm. Lukewarm water does not taste pleasant, especially if it contains a detectable mineral content.

17 Because you say, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing, and do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,
18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold purified by fire, so that you may be rich;

Laodicea was a centre for banking and finance, which made it a place of wealth. The wealth lead to complacency. As with most believers immersed in a particular culture, some of that culture tends to rub off. The believers there are counselled to seek the wealth that is meaningful in the long term.

18 and white clothing, so that you may be clothed, and [so that] the shame of your nakedness does not appear.

Laodicea was also noted for its clothing industry. The wool employed was obtained from the local sheep population described as having soft, glossy wool of dark coloration. The clothing worn by the citizens would have reflected that.

18 And anoint your eyes with eye salve, so that you may see.

Would it be a surprise to learn that Laodicea was also famous for a special salve it produced for treating eye problems?

===================================================================================

I think the Laodiceans, prior to receiving this injunction, would have loved the idea of dogecoin and the like.

Yes.
God is commanding YOU to sell everything you own, buy Dodgecoin, and then live in a cardboard box with other homeless people so YOU can tell THEM about how Jesus died so they can live forever.

Also, what does it mean when it says to put salve on my eyes to see? Is it talking about smearing gall bladder from a fish on my eyes?
Probably.
If smearing fish gall bladders on your eye balls seems like a good idea, then why not go for it.

:rolleyes:

[EDIT: This post was sarcasm. I can’t believe that we live in a world where McDonalds needs to post a sign “HOT COFFEE IS HOT” and I need to post a disclaimer to prevent someone from taking my sarcasm seriously and injuring themselves.]

COMMON SENSE is so rare that it should be listed as a “superpower”.

In fairness this is also the world where the packet of mixed nuts contains the warning that the product "may contain nuts" with the implied possibility that it may not contain nuts. It's only marginally less obvious than the other warning that it is "packaged in an environment where nuts are present". Because, you know, I'd hope that was the case.

:ROFLMAO:

We know there was at least ONE NUT present … they were creating the packaging. :cool:

Wow, thank you guys for all the helpful info. I’m so excited to learn that the Bible does in fact say to buy Dogecoin. I’m also glad to learn all the additional information too, like the fact that coffee is hot and that packets of nuts contain nuts. I did not know these things before.
