More sanding of this bedside table I want to refinish. So far I've got everything I plan to sand actually sanded. This morning's fun was sanding the more intricate molding with finer grades of sandpaper. Now everything has been sanded with 220 grit paper and is smooth to the touch. I've given it a good wipe with some paper towels to get the last of the fine dust off the surface. The next step is to give it a wipe with very slightly damp paper towels, then let it dry, then I can look at applying a coat of stain.

Kinda lazy day today. Checked on my bedside table in the basement and it looks really nice. Next step is to lacquer it, maybe I can do that tomorrow.

Another lazy morning. I need to get on with lacquering that bedside table but the weather outside is really nasty and I should really open a window before working with an open can of lacquer. I didn't open the window while staining it, which probably wasn't a clever decision. I don't really notice the build-up of the VOCs but when my wife came down to see my handiwork the first thing she said from the top of the basement stairs was how strong the smell was. When I went back upstairs I could tell the difference. It's curious how the fumes don't seem to affect me.

Eeek! Even though you don't "feel" the effects it could affect your nervous system. When I worked in a Market company and we had to work with chemicals to do our ads and such, we had to have a ventilation system because even a simple spray of something is bad. Be careful.

If I know I'm going to be doing a lot of something I usually try and put a fan in the window to suck air out. It's a bit tricky with the basement because I don't want to disturb any sawdust from the floor and have it stick in the fresh lacquer. Somewhere on the list of things to do is to get some proper extraction fans, remove one of the basement windows entirely, and replace it with swappable panels. Panels would include a plain mesh bug screen, a double-glazed window, and an extraction fan. In the summer time I'd most likely just put the bug screeens in, in the winter time I'd use the windows, and when working I could use the extraction fan.

When I lacquered the floor in the finished room even a fan wasn't really an option because I couldn't have the wire laying on the floor and couldn't open the window far enough for it to make a meaningful difference anyway.

I think for future floor lacquering (I have several more rooms to finish, and almost all of them will want the floor finished) I'm going to build a frame out of some wood so I can open the window a crack while staying sufficiently closed I can use the security latches, then mount a window fan at the back of the frame and incorporate some kind of clip to keep the wire under control. That should give me the combination of security and weather proofing while also getting rid of at least most of the fumes.

Happy Friday all! How are you? This morning, I’ve just enjoyed a most pleasant and refreshing walk, meditation, breathing exercises and yoga session outside in the freezing cold but sunshine, currently feeling like-14C. The afternoon, just enjoying my usual TV show before heading to bed tonight.

I got the first coat of lacquer on the bedside table I've been fixing up. I tried opening the window but as soon as I opened it a crack the wind gushed in and I didn't want dust blowing around in the basement.

Thankfully I was able to get the whole thing lacquered in one go. I put some OSB offcuts onto a workbench to make a base big enough to set it on, and brought one of my worklights into play so I could get bright light onto the area I was working. Then it was just a matter of getting lacquer into all the nooks and crannies of the molding. It's dry now but I've cleaned up and I'd rather not be dealing with fine lacquer dust - the next step is to run fine sandpaper over it and then apply another coat of lacquer.

This afternoon I took in a fast walk in the sunshine before a really good meeting.

Waiting for it to warm up. I'd love to go for a walk since it's sunny outside!

For some reason my blood sugar has been higher than normal today and I've had a headache most of the day. Some of that could be sinus problems since things are starting to bloom here.

Just relaxing on this cloudy day with a little rain. Played a little poker, and rummaged some potatoes out of my yard. Cleaned up a small massacre of dead mice (cat's handiwork), and scolded her for bringing them in.

I noticed my spring allergies hit a little early and had to take my allergy medicine. I hate having to take anything but I felt better after doing so.
