Lazier day today. My neck has a bit of a crick in it this morning, probably from craning it to see what I was doing when I was running the SDS in the confined crawl space. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with a pile of old concrete blocks. Maybe I can find someone who needs rubble for a construction project. Someone coming to take it away for free, saving them the cost of buying rubble and saving me the cost of taking it to the landfill, seems like a win-win.

Happy Friday all! How are you? This morning, I’ve just had a most please and peaceful walk, meditation, yoga and breathing exercises session outside in the cold and sunshine, currently feeling like -5C. The afternoon, just playing some games on my Switch before turning myself in tonight.

I'm pretty bad about sticking to that routine because it's so costly.
Lucky for me, I only drive 2 miles to work and I only put around 5,000 miles on my car per year. I bought my car in October of 2016 and I just turned over 20,000 miles yesterday.

I live in the country so driving anywhere takes almost a half hour! We do have some things in town that are about 15 minutes away though. My church is about 45 minutes away (30min to 50min) on average and it's been nice not having to drive there because of covid and I get to watch the videos online. I've saved a ton on gas last year!

Where I used to live it was quite common I'd put less than 3000 miles on the car in a year. It was always borderline whether it was worth keeping at all, but by the time it was so old it was worth more or less nothing there didn't seem any point practically giving it away and using taxis instead. Where we lived public transport met most of our needs but the times we needed to get somewhere not well served by public transport were sufficiently frequent that we decided we'd keep a cheap car running rather than having to improvise every week.

This morning I made my first (satisfactory) sprouted wheat flat bread from scratch (using whole wheat kernels not flour). I say "satisfactory" because I've made it from scratch before without flour, but the dough was tough to work with. Then I discovered Autolysis, which changed everything, and reduced kneading time too.

Easy steps:

1. Soak wheat kernels overnight.
2. Drain next morning, rinse once during day
3. Rinse once a day, mix twice. Sprouts should start forming.

4. Blend with salt (wheat berries should be chew-able for this step), and a touch of water (enough for Autolyse, but nothing approaching sogginess). Blender should be sufficient to turn soft kernels into dough like consistency.

5. Wait 2 hours (do not knead). This is where Autolyse does it's magic
6. Knead for 1 minute (pulse on dough maker)

Dough is ready!

My arms ache. Where I took down the chimney stack late last week, today I hauled the concrete blocks out ready to get rid of them. I'm not yet sure how I'm going to get rid of them. Based on rough estimates I think I hauled about 300lb of blocks from the attic and another 1300lb from upstairs on the other side of the house. I so wished I could have just thrown them out of the window, like I did with piles of wooden laths, but didn't like the thought of that much concrete crashing down so close to the side of the house. I hope my arms aren't going to ache for too long.

Hello morning all! How’s it going so far with your day? This morning, I’ve had a most enjoyable and peaceful walk, meditation, yoga and breathing exercises session in the bitter cold outside, currently feeling like -27C. The afternoon, just relaxing online before rocking myself to sleep tonight.

Hire a teenager for a few hours!

Easier to just do it myself.

Firstly hiring a teenager means finding a teenager interested in doing the job without dragging stuff across the floor, and having the work done at a time that works for them and for me, rather than just getting on with it in my own time. It also means asking a teenager to carry heavy blocks while navigating rooms and stairs with assorted obstacles. To give just one example, at the bottom of the stairs I've got a piece of wood trim resting on a radiator, with nails in it. It's easy to get past it but wouldn't end well if someone didn't notice it.

As it happens my arms don't hurt too much today. Yesterday afternoon even lifting a glass of water felt like my muscles were griping at me.

For good measure, it turns out a fairly near neighbor can use the concrete blocks for some work he is wanting to do. So the chances are pretty high that one evening this week I'll be helping him shift them. If he can use concrete blocks I'm almost tempted to bring forward the destruction of the lower part of the chimney stack so I can get rid of that as well.
