Hello morning all! How’s it going so far with your day? Today, just playing some games on my phone before hitting the bed tonight.

I ate an early lunch because I bought buffalo wings from the grocery store and they were calling to me from inside the fridge LOL

Now I'm relaxing my tummy and watching tv.

Buffalo wings? I didn't think buffalo could fly. Are they like ostriches that have wings but can't fly?

They're bright orange and tiny so not like ostriches at all but tiny buffalos that roam the earth where no one can see.

Baby buffalo? Maybe they lose their wings before they reach adulthood :)

I got some more ripping done. The waterproof sides to the shower cubicle in the bathroom that needs to come out are now down. The only piece remaining is the one with the mixer tap and the shower head and that needs to stay until I figure the best way to cut the water. There was a nice neat inspection hatch behind the mixer tap so I'd hoped someone had put valves in the space so the bath/shower could be disconnected. Obviously that would have been far too useful. I'm really not sure why they bothered with the hatch at all - it wasn't aligned in a way that made the mixer tap accessible and there were no valves behind it.

That said, not much surprises me in this house any more. Before long I'll have some copper pipe to add to my scrap copper collection. When I rebuild everything I'll use PEX.

It's possible. I think they're on the extinction list. 🦬

Waiting for WalMart to open so I can go buy some safety goggles for my husband since he couldn't find them this morning in the garage. That means they aren't there right?

Got some more of my bathroom ripped apart. Previously I got the end and side panels over the bath removed. Today I dismantled the stud wall at the end of the bath and took down almost all of the drywall beside the bath. There's now a clear line of sight through the stud wall into the adjacent room.

Next up I need to disconnect the water so I can remove the plumbing fixtures, disconnect the drain from the bathtub, and get the bathtub out of the way. The light I put in the adjacent room doesn't really cast enough light to feel comfortable doing the work I need to do, not least because the valves that disconnect that part of the house aren't in a good way. One is so badly corroded there's almost nothing left and the other is stuck tight and difficult to access. I can see what I'll probably do is turn off the master valve to the house, then cut the valves out and replace them with new ones, then turn everything back on.

Along the way I'll need to rejig some of the pipework. For some reason whatever genius set it all up created a nasty jumble of pipes such that the valve to disconnect the bathroom also disconnects the outside tap. So it looks like I'll need three valves - hot water, cold water, outside tap. I think I currently have two valves in my stock, but at a push I can do without the hot water supply to this bathroom for a time. The only reason I want to keep the cold water supply is so that I can mix cement in the area, as there's almost certainly still some brickwork repair to be done.

We had strong winds all night so I didn't get much sleep and woke up early. Maybe I'll go back to bed if the winds die down a bit.

Curiously, comparing last night when I went to bed shortly before midnight, with previous nights where I sat up writing code until 1am or slightly after, it seems I sleep better when I'm thinking hard before turning in. It makes little sense but seems to be consistent. Although I did wake up at 530 wondering whether I made a critical mistake in my code, so I'll need to check that before I make my final build.

I didn't get to the pipework today, I took to ripping some more wall apart. Now I've got my chimney breast completely exposed and am confident it isn't structural. I'm going to ask a friend who works in construction if he'd take a look and confirm my thoughts, and maybe also get some tips on how best to get rid of it. It doesn't seem to be part of my exterior wall but is close enough I'd rather not be swinging a sledgehammer at it.

I expected it would take me a while to fill a 60lb bag of wood scraps for my friend with the furnace. Because of ripping away featherboards it actually took me two weeks. Along the way I also filled bags with something like 120lb of drywall pieces. They can be lined up ready for the garbage company to take them away.

Pretty cold out here, my weather app says 23 degrees.Too cold to be doing much outside. Maybe my friend will be able to come and look at my chimney breast. If he can do that maybe I can make a start on taking it down - that's entirely internal work. It will get cold - once I take the top layer away the room will have a clear air gap into the attic, so I'll need to cut out a piece of drywall to pin into place to offer at least a barrier to the cold air. Later on I can get into the crawl space and put some insulation over the top of it. That section is hard to get at, as it's right in the very corner where the roof is very low.
