"Stargirl" (2020), the Disney adaptation of Jerry Spinelli's famous young adult novel, seems like a fun movie that I'm looking forward to.

You know what? I take that back. I started reading the novel and, while I was impressed with the first half, I got to a scene in it that made me abandon the book. And I watched some of the movie scenes on YouTube, only to realize that the adaptation is even worse than the book. I think this is a terribly disappointing film.

I didn't like the way in which the author felt the need to sexualize the story by adding in a kissing scene out of the blue and in a very distasteful way. After presenting an innocent friendship-like romance between Leo and Stargirl for about a quarter of the book and after making it seem like Stargirl was this atypical, hippie-like, super-kind to everyone teenage girl, this is how the author thought it would be appropriate to describe their first kiss (which shouldn't have existed in the first place - why do all YA books have to have premarital kissing?):

Leo is amazed at how much Stargirl is interested in helping other people and at how many good deeds she does for others. He jokingly asks her if she's running for saint. She gets slightly offended for a minute, but, after a short discussion, she concludes that he's just jealous cause she's not paying enough attention to him. And then she becomes unnaturally flirty and seductive and they kiss all of a sudden and the final sentence of the scene is: "And I can tell you, that was no saint kissing me."

Aw, yeah the YA books do have kissing and I'm glad the majority of them don't go beyond that. That's why I prefer a lot of the YA books to most other genres.
