“I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the Truth.” – Rom 1:16-18
What IS the Gospel?
“Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom”
– Matt 4:23
What Gospel did Jesus preach?
“Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
- Mark 1:14-15
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jesus never preached to the crowds that He would die for our sins. He didn’t even tell His closest disciples until near the end of His ministry that He was to be crucified. So, what “Gospel” did Jesus preach and declare we must believe in? What is this “Gospel of the Kingdom” that our Lord DID speak about? Do Repentance and Righteousness and Inheritance, which Jesus emphasized greatly in His teaching fit into this “Gospel of the Kingdom”?
We hear often that the Gospel must be preached to all the earth and then the end shall come. And most seem to believe that this means we must strive to get everyone to believe in the Atonement so they can accept Jesus, be forgiven and saved, because if they don’t, they will end up in hell. Hmmm…
Personally, I believe a brief look at the context of Jesus’ declaration about “this Gospel” gives us deeper insight on what He actually meant. And again, this Truth was given, not to the masses, but only to His closest disciples -
“Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
- Matt 24:3-14
“This gospel” refers to what He said in the preceding verses. There is no mention of His dying for our sins here. Can we believe our Lord’s “good news” concerning tribulation, persecution and testing of our faith, that we might obtain “salvation” if we endure?
Just dropping a couple thoughts here, as I prepare to take some time looking into the “Gospel” and what it is that Jesus told us to “believe in.”
