Do you have big plans for New Year's Eve? We usually get a pizza and watch movies.

Had hoped to hang out with friends but they are sick, so we might be spending the evening at home. Not sure yet.

Wild pajama party with lots of friends, people racing up and down the street with fireworks on their heads shooting into the air. Mixed drinks, lots of wine, food... free flowing dom perignon, noise makers and hat, prosecco with fruit at midnight.... okay been there done that, I'll probably just watch it on TV and fall asleep on the couch before midnight. :faint:

For the past 10 years, since we wed, my wife and I have rung in the New Year with a Polish dish (which was a favorite of my Mom) – Golumpki, and a viewing of “The Fiddler on the Roof” movie.
At midnight we take Communion together and pray, seeking the Lord and committing the New Year to Him.

Plus you'll have an early morning New Year's Day since he won't be sleeping in late.

Just how large are pizzas in your country? o_O

Supersized like everything else here in the US! That's why so many are fat!

I think the Large sizes are like 16 to 18 inches in diameter.

One pizza shop in England used to offer what they called a "humungous" pizza. They recommended you check the width of your door before ordering it. I forget just how big it was, but do remember a time that it fed five people, all of whom were fairly described as pizza monsters.

We ended up going to the restaurant to eat our pizza and brought home the leftovers. It wasn't too bad of a pizza but definitely not our favorite type we get in Chicagoland.

One local-ish place to us has specials every once in a while where you can get any pizza, any size, for something like $12 (eat in). My wife and I joined a members' club there that gives assorted specials, and sometimes we get a $10 coupon that can be used against the special-prized pizza. It's pretty good having a pizza that's enough to feed us both and have enough to take home for another meal, for $2.

At first when the waiters there realised we were ordering a $12 pizza with a $10 coupon you could almost see their expectation of a tip disappearing. The first time we used it I think the pizza was $10.99 and the server looked as if he truly expected to be getting a percentage of 99c (he still looked after us, but didn't look like he expected much of a tip). But we usually have a couple of drinks with the pizza, and I still tip based on the menu price rather than the coupon-adjusted price. They don't do any less work looking after us just because we had a coupon. It's kinda funny when you get a coupon that's a huge proportion of the total cost, and the tip ends up being more than the final bill.

That's why tipping has gotten out of control I think and something needs to change.

We had a free meal recently as part of a training and our bill came to less than $15 which should have been over $75 worth of food/drinks. I told my husband what the total should have been and we tipped on that but I don't know how many other people thought to do the same.

It's hard to know. Part of the problem with the tipping culture is that the waiter who brings a $75 lobster to the table isn't doing any more work than the next waiter who brings a $5 sandwich, so it's not unreasonable to ask why the first one should get $15 and the second only get $1 for the same amount of work. And then of course you get the tables that expect to be treated like royalty, complain about every little thing and then don't tip at all.

I'd rather see wait staff be subjected to the same minimum wage as everyone else and make tipping truly optional. That said, given the possibility to make 15-20% of what they serve, I suspect the better wait staff would rather keep the tipping system. I think I'd rather have the chance to make 20% of every check, when they routinely run $60-100, than a flat $7-8/hour with whatever extra people cared to offer. All you need is a decent tip on a $100 check and you've made as much from one table as nearly three hours worth of regular minimum wage.
