Surprisingly no soreness from my fall this morning. It was interesting getting into bed last night though, as I sat down and shifted my weight I ended up with my weight right over the bit I landed on, which didn't feel too good. This morning was pretty much fine, although with a little tenderness where I landed. The scrapes on my arm are clearing up already.

So fr it's been a lazy day, opened some presents and now waiting for the turkey in the oven. Curiously before I turned in last night I hadn't processed my long walk so I took a melatonin tablet - this time of year I sometimes use it to help me sleep - but after the long walk I really didn't need it, so was a bit sluggish trying to get up this morning. I feel like I could drink my own body weight in coffee.

Also managed to find a bottle of port from last Christmas, and got a very fine stout aged in merlot barrels lurking in the basement. That might meet its demise later today.

Managed to get a walk in the woods, the first one in a month or more. Mostly it was good but parts of it were a bit hairy. On one stage of the path I slipped on ice and fell on my butt. Thankfully I'm still in good enough shape that it hurt my pride more than my body, but I might be a bit sore tomorrow. I skinned a couple of fingers, so by the time I got back to the car they looked pretty ugly. It just took a bit of water to clean it all up when I got home - from the overall lack of pain I figured it was nothing serious.

Tonight is a service at church. I kinda have to be there, I'm working the sound desk.

OW!! Glad you wrote later that it doesn't hurt so bad this morning. Stay safe!

Hoping to get at least a couple more walks in before December is out, but my longer loop will be off the agenda until the ice melts. Parts of it after the patch where I slipped were even hairier - much more uneven and a much higher chance of a nasty injury if I slipped. There were a couple of places where I went backwards so I could hang on to things, or dropped to all fours for more stability. The shorter loop cuts the distance to about 6 miles and drops from 2000 to about 1350 feet of climbing, but I can confidently do that hike without any chance of slipping. It just means I lose the vista. I love the vista.

At present one finger looks like it got in a fight with a cheese grater but as long as I don't hit it, it doesn't hurt. I just have to be careful when playing with the cat. He doesn't know that my finger is a bit delicate.

Even where we live there is ice and yesterday we walked along a river that I wouldn't want to fall into if I slipped on that ice! I can't wait until hunting season is over so I can go back to other trails.

Are your trails off limits during hunting season? I know some areas are for hunters only but the trails I hike are open year round. I just wear lots of bright colors when hunters might be out. I have a vivid orange sweatshirt and a two-tone vest that's bright orange and bright yellow. It's handy for the times it's too warm for a sweatshirt. Or the times it's cold but I worked up a sweat blasting up the side of the mountain :)

Getting ready to go use our gas rewards for my car. We usually use it on the truck since it has a bigger tank but it doesn't need gas and the end of the month is near so we don't want points to expire.

Ha.... we often find ourselves doing that. If one of us needs gas we figure which car will take the most gas and fill up. But then sometimes even a modest discount isn't enough to make it worth the detour - our local gas station is often still cheaper.

It's a long drive to this gas station so we wait until the end of the month and see how many points are expiring to estimate the worth of it all. Our local gas stations have higher taxes so we usually drive to the next state where it's cheaper.

Handy if you live close enough to a state line to do that. Years ago I had a friend who often crossed the line between NC and SC for that very reason. I can't remember which was cheaper - fro what I recall one of them imposed a property tax on the value of your car, and gas taxes were lower. Which was a huge benefit to people who lived just across the state line, so they didn't have to pay the tax on the value of their car but could get cheap gas.

Personally I've often found that the cost of the gas it takes to save a few bucks isn't worth it. Unless you've got huge savings on a gallon and an enormous tank, the cost of dealing with it rapidly soaks up any benefits. My car only has a 13-odd gallon tank so even if I can save 40c on a gallon it works out to a whopping $5 if the car is running on vapors. Woo.

I went out for a shorter version of my walk in the woods. It looked like most of the snow and ice had melted but I decided to err on the side of caution and not do the extended loop, the bit where I slipped and fell on Tuesday. I didn't want to get to a point where it was awkward to go forward or to turn back, so just cut that piece off. So I did about 6 miles with 1300-odd feet of climbing. It's a nice walk, and unusually warm - hovering in the mid 40s today. I took my sweatshirt in case I got cold in the wind on the ridge but didn't need it at all.

I went to Sunday School and worship this morning and came home and ate lunch and did a little work online. I've been going to the same church for the last six weeks now
