Paying taxes

What would you say would be the biggest pain in filing taxes? Mine would have to be filling out the tedious paperwork, even if you have someone else helping you out.

Better still; no personal taxes if you earn less than a million $ and company taxes for every dollar of profit earned - no sneaky tax haven loop holes.

I like the idea of a flat tax. I hate having to pay estimated taxes for the county and state just because I work in another state. We're one country. Let's get it together.

Mostly just gathering papers, figuring out what can be deducted and usually filling the form in numerous times where each time reduces the overall bill a little more.

I get double the fun at tax time because of requirements to report to the UK and US tax bodies, who work on different financial years and have different reporting requirements. Some years a particular income source might only generate $20 and when that happens the time it takes to figure out who needs to know about it and how to declare it is sometimes enough that I'd rather just split it in two, send the IRS $10 and HMRC $10 and not bother with the forms.

Flat taxes hit the low income earners far more than higher income earners. 10% of your barely-able-to-live income is a whole lot while 10% of you I-am-rich-and-can-afford-to-buy-an-island-for-Christmas income is hardly noticeable.

What I learned this year is that for our state taxes, if we file married filing jointly the numbers come out one way and if we file married filing separately we somehow get a better deal out of it!

Doing them at all, or paying any direct taxes on my labor. I live in Australia, but America got it right with the Constitution when it originally had no direct "income" taxes on citizens. "Income" is in quotes because it is so often mis defined, and for the purpose of justifying the tax, I might add.

I agree and do away with all those special tax breaks that people who can afford it use to pay very little

The money. THAT'S the part I dislike the most. :wink:


Actually, I think ALL (over the age of 18 anyway) should pay SOMETHING.... if only 5%. We are all citizens, we all benefit, we should all contribute. But the top level should be below 30-35%. And a LOT of those deductions need to be cleaned up. As does the reporting process (I'm just no expert on HOW to do either!). And I understand the US has - by far - the highest corporate/business tax on the planet: that needs to be corrected if America is to have any business left.
