I always thought the elect were those few chosen by God to lead the rest.

According to scripture they are the only ons that Satan cannot sway to his bidding.

It may be that one who is in communion with Christ is elect insofar as Christ is himself God's elect one.

There's nothing to support that.

I don't recall where I read it exactly. But it is in scripture. You could consider the elect the leaders of the church if the had actually been calls to by God and not just in it for money or because they went to college for it.

Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. - 2 Timothy 2:10

Yeah, I guess you'd want your leaders to be saved.

12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. - Colossians 3:12-13

I wonder if this is also for those who are saved yet not elect.

Why do you suppose Paul singled out teachers without specifying that he was doing so?

Elect or shepards aren't the same as sheep or the masses.

Also; everyone can learn from the whole bible.
Lastly I think that a lot of what they wrote was somewhat outside of their comprehension as it was imbued to them by God for future generations and may or may not have pertained to them directly or their time and or situation.
