I must add to a condition that has occurred due to the recent marriage laws.
Many Churches will teach that you must obey the law of the land.
They will quote render unto Cesasar ...
I find this a bit amusing due to religious zelots being judgemental on others for breaking the law of the he land.
This circumstance is a result of legalism, and creates hypocrisy.
I am of the opinion that it is not really very hard to read and apply scripture in such a way that one need never become a bigot or act unjustly and cruelly towards others. The Westminster Confession of faith says it kind of pithily this way "yielding obedience to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the promises of God for this life, and that which is to come." Those words are part of the chapter on saving faith and describe what such a faith does in response to the revealed will of God. If reading holy scripture changes us internally by drawing us to obey its commands, tremble at its threads, and embrace its promises then we will not be cruel to others because a commandment appears to justify a cruel act instead we'd yield obedience to the command in how we live and what we do rather than punishing, persecuting, or otherwise seeking to impose our 'reading' of the commandment on them.
