Just been in the attic again. Another four garbage bags of cellulose insulation are lifted, a bunch more floorboards are removed, and some old wires are disconnected. I really wanted to do the job cleanly but the only way I could do that would be to move a very heavy dresser, and there's no way I can do that unaided. So I killed the circuit and just cut the wire off. It's a temporary measure, with red tape over the cut end so I know it's still live. The other cut ends have green tape on the ends so I know they are safe. I can pull the cables out completely whenever timing suits me.
Still got some more insulation to lift, then I can get into the cracks and crevices with my separator to suck out the rest of it. Emptying the separator is a drag - the metal trash can I used turned out to not be strong enough for the job so I cut a ring of wood to brace it, but it makes it harder to empty it into a trash bag. Usually I seem to get as much on myself as in the trash bag, but at least if it all dumps into a pile it's easier to scoop most of it up, than if it's all in the nooks and crannies of my attic. Hopefully I won't be taking too much of a cellulose bath today. Then I can get the new fiberglass put down, and some new flooring over the top.
We have house guests arriving soon so I'll have to revisit some of the work I wanted to get done after they are gone. I'd rather not do it that way but better that than leaving the ceiling to our bedroom uninsulated now it's starting to cool down. Using my thermal camera I can see a patchwork of colors in the ceiling, where some parts of the insulation are there and others are gone. Hopefully the fiberglass will turn everything back to a nice warm color.
