One thing I really miss about being a kid is getting my dad's permission to stay up late on Friday nights to watch "Tales From The Tomb" which would air classic horror movies at midnight. With a twinkle in his eye, my dad would say, "If I let you stay up so we can watch the movie, you can't fall asleep before or during the movie, and you have to get up on Saturday morning to do your chores bright-eyed and bushy tailed."
I would eagerly promise to do so, and then we wait out the mundane things like the news etc., and finally midnight would come and we would watch the movie, eating popcorn and drinking Pepsi (my mother obligatorily scolded him for letting me have these things in the middle of the night), and he would tell me how he watched these same movies when he was a kid and they were released in the theaters. What was nice about it was he enjoyed this time together every bit as much as I did.
My dad was on the strict side most of the time, but at times like these, we were partners in crime and I look back with great fondness on it.
