John 16:13-15 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on HIs own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you."

How does the Spirit guide you into all truth?

Lately, I have noticed when I am in my men's group we are discussing the sermon and as the group talks I will be reminded of a scripture. I have been assuming that this is the Spirit prompting me to share a scripture and will look it up and then ask if I can share it with everyone. You notice in this passage above that the Spirit both glorifies Christ and discloses what is His.

This is closely related to John 14:26
"but the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

The Spirit of God guides the whole church as a community of faith and that is how each person in the church receives instruction. The holy scriptures are given to the community and when read in the community the shared wisdom of the people of God is guided by the Spirit to discover truths as they are needed.

Good to remember the "YOU" here is in the plural...... If I were a Southerner, it would be "you ALL....."

Problem, IMO, is that individual persons (or churches or denominations) tend to delete the plural "you" here and insert their own individual proper name. The extreme individualism of the "Enlightenment" is a pandemic... and it's infected the church big time.

I agree. It's the #1 reason why I left your denomination, MC. It passionately and foundationally rejects your pov. It insists that God leads, protects and teaches ONE (at least fully) - it itself alone (exclusively, solely, individually, denominationally). The extreme individualism and egoism of the RC Denomination was the #1 reason I left it. I agree with you, rather than the opposite obsession of your denomination.

Thank you!

Individuals work for the benefit of the body. No one has gifts to make themselves important. Gifts are given to build up the body.

Yes He brings it to remembrance. Sometimes He pops up texts I haven't read in 10 years.
Lol once He gave me a text. I just had a baby and was worried. I didnt do anything right. The milk came out all the time and I was like: I do nothing right. I cant even feed my kid. Then I threw open the Bible and saw a text I had never seen before: even yackals feed their young.
LOL I was like: then I can too.

I had a seminary professor Dr.Curtis Vaughn, who said to us one day not to get too proud of ourselves for God speaking through us because he also once used a jackal.

I do think he brings things to rememberance. The Spirits job is to bring glory to Christ. Our job is to get into the Word so he has something to remind us of.

The Holy Spirit is gonna use the word that we know by scripture to show us who Jesus is so we may have eternal life.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

John 15:3-5 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.

Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith."

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.

2 Corinthians 2:14-17 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Galatians 3:2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

Galatians 3:5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith--

Ephesians 1:13 “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in who also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.”

James 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

1 Peter 1:23-25 ...since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

With all the wonderful scripture giving us assurance of salvation (am I allowed to open up the 'osas' here yet, lol) , I still find it hard to believe there are so many ppl, (and even whole denominations) that not only try to deny our eternal security and sufficiency in Christ alone, but actually teach anathema for those that are trusting in Jesus to save them.
I just don't know how they read those scriptures and arrive at that.

It is easy to jump right into application to us without ever observing the passage.
My first questions are: To whom is Jesus speaking? Is this comment meant to be taken universally or is it meant for the specific disciples to whom Jesus is speaking?

... and is the "you" here specific to any single person or church or denomination?

... and does "teach" equal an infallible/unaccountable STUDENT? Does "lead" equal an infallible/unaccountable FOLLOWER?

Seems that God taught and lead His Chosen People in the OT.... seems they RARELY learned or followed, much less perfectly.

Seems that God taught and lead Adam and Eve when they were still SINLESS and living in a SINLESS world.... neither learned or followed (at least perfectly and always).

I think the "problem" is not with God or His promise.... the problem is with the students and followers. And with the tendency to insist God ONLY promises this to ME*.... and that there is ONE infallible/unaccountable student/follower and self insists that one is... well.... you know.

Thank you.

'whoever you forgive their sins is forgkven, who you don't forgive is not forgiven', I don't think that's for just any christian who feels grumpy and doesn't want to forgive someone.

Hi MennoSota

Without a quote, I dont know which comment you're referring to...was it part of mine from the previous post #10? A particular verse, passage or added comment of mine or another's, perhaps? In general, I'd agree with your questions highlighting the importance of rightly dividing the word, proper context and application, etc.

Hi Ima

Can you define A S O S and explain how believing that Jesus saved us creates whatever that is?

aso's, antisocials, ppl who only take these texts and not the others that you have to abide in Him and such. Foolish virgins. We're saved anyway. Now lets go kill the neighbourhood. Now a lot of ppl are so intelligent to not take it to that extreme, but the foolish virgins were 50 percent. False grace, root is OSAS.

I'm merely asking how we should read the passages quoted from John regarding what Jesus is saying. We often want to apply a promise or comment from the scriptures, but we take it out of context and then end up discouraged when it doesn't happen according to our application.
My questions are general questions about the passage.

(Okay, home from a long day, now, okay I'm trying to understand this)....That trusting in Jesus creates anti-social ppl? And anti-social ppl are those that only believe some parts of scripture but not other parts? I dont think thats what you believe, I'm just having a hard time making the connection with what you posted. Sorry, I's a bit slooow today. But I'll keep trying....and I definitely dont mean to be anti-social.
