Does anyone sleep with a night guard? If so, did you use a store bought one that you either microwave or use boiling water to mold or did you get one from your dentist custom made?

My oncologist I saw on Friday thinks that there is a lot of friction going on in my mouth and it might be happening at night where my tongue is receiving a lot of damage. That COULD be a reason I had a lesion on it...that turned into cancer. They still aren't sure what happened to me.

So I bought a store bought one but it's going to take a while to get used to it.

Years ago my dentist told me i had TMJ and needed one and I said thanks, but no thanks and didn't do it. Funny that they never mention in anymore and I go get a cleaning every six months. It's isn't the same dentist either

Did your body fix itself then or do you think the diagnosis was wrong?

Just a minute. What the dentist might have hoped to correct with such a device is not the same as what your oncologist is attempting. I wouldn't dismiss his advice in this matter as easily as I might dismiss a dentists suggestion about using a mouth guard. The potential benefits and/or the consequences are nowhere near the same.

Both my oncologist and dentist are finding too much friction going on in my mouth. That most likely led to the lesion that eventually turned into cancer. I don't smoke, don't drink and don't do drugs. They're trying to figure out why I got cancer but also prevent more lesions from occurring.

I understand. I was cautioning against thinking that this advice is to be taken or left in the way that jsimms said he declined the advice of his dentist and suffered no setback as a result.

I see! No, I will do whatever it takes to prevent any lesions from recurring so that the cancer doesn't have a chance! That and prayer :)

I think the diagnosis was wrong. Everyone in that particular dentist office had a mouth guard. It's extra money for a greedy dentist
