Immediately after Elijah's showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elijah hears a word from Jezebel who tells him that she is going to kill him. He gets scared and makes a run for it. This is the same man who faced down hundreds of prophets of Baal in the previous chapter. He requests in 1 King 19:4 that he might die.

The angel of the Lord gives him nourishment and then also a new task. what lessons could we learn from this experience of Elijah and how quickly he gets down and discouraged? What can we learn from God from this passage and his not rebuking Elijah for his being tired? Does it say anything to you about how to deal with times when we feel down?

Yes I think all Christians can gleen wisdom from this scripture scenario. Like at times when I'm down and God 'feels' distant I remind myself of those special times when God intervened on a very personal level and vis versa other times that God 'feels' distant I remember other times that He 'felt' distant but still got me through and it helps sustain me durung those 'distant' periods of time.

i listend to a sermon about this passage yesterday. The pastor said that Elijah had lost perspective and thought that he was the only one left who hadn't bowed to Baal. The Lord let him know that 7,000 people hadn't bowed to Baal or worshiped him.

Read a preaching somewhere about it lately. I always heard it was a Jezebel attack, if you're depressed it's an attack from the devil. God let him sleep, gave him food. Then he still didn't want to and God took someone else, Elisha. Btw Moses did that too. He didn't listen to God out of fear for Pharao and then Aaron did it.

I always read that section thinking that Elijah was a little proud for being faithful and there is no indication in the text to give me that feeling. One thing that strikes me in the passage is how, no matter our feeling, God's will be done. Feeling down makes people turn inward but the way to get out of that is to do for others or to be a servant. God shows us examples of that...Elijah was down but God gave him a mission that turned his focus off his feelings and onto what God's will was.

From what I have seen many people who are depressed are focused on things they have no control over. It is simply a waste of energy and time. Instead, the focus should be on what you can control and what you can do. Sometimes it may be very little then you just have to learn to let that go and give it to God. As you look at the story you realize that Jezebel was bad news, but she wasn't able to follow through with her threat

I prayed for a woman once w a counselling weekend for hours. She was depressed and stuff happened in her youth. God really touched her and healed her. She was happy. Then a day later: who has a testimony? She: yeah well complain complain complain. AAAARGH!! All the work for nothing! Oh my you need patience fo that and I don't have it. My parents just raised me like: don't whine, don't complain, be happy. My dad hated it if I cried as a baby. He put headphones on. Worked great. If someone cries or is depressed I'm like: did your parents allow that?
And I believe its a spirit causing it like that Jezebel spirit, but you have to cooperate to get out.

People do things for a reason. Behavior serves some type of purpose. If it didn't it wouldn't be there. Even when people get depressed or anxious it is serving their needs somehow. That is just my opinion
