We're asking members to help us assemble a list of abbreviations that are being used on this site or someday MIGHT be used!

Our most revered tech guy, Mark, has a neat program that will show what the abbreviation means when you hover over it...but we NEED to know which ones to include first!

So, post here in this thread! Thanks!!!! :yourock"

Just to get the ball rolling, here are a few:

CH - Christianity Haven
PM - Private Message
VM - Visitor Message

These abbreviations do not have to be vBulletin or Christianity specific, just any abbreviation or acronym that you think people will use here and should be on the list. :)

Once we have the add-on active and a list defined, whenever someone posts one of the abbreviations, it will appear with a dotted line beneath it, and then when you hover your mouse cursor over the abbreviation, you will see what the abbreviation means.

In alphabetical order no less...we think alike, and in the product settings I even added code so that when the list of abbreviations is updated it is automatically alphabetized so that they are easy to find when checking to see which are on the list. :)

Honestly, if we're not careful here we could end up with so many acronyms that could refer to so many different things it's better to encourage people to refer to something by name first and only later by abbreviations. Depending on context LSE could refer to the London Stock Exchange or the London School of Economics, IHOP could refer to a fast food outlet selling pancakes or a prayer center in Missouri, and so on. When denominations like Methodists and Mennonites share the first letter anything beginning with M could easily refer to either, and if we're not careful we'll end up with something like the scene from Monty Python's movie The Life Of Brian with the Judean Peoples' Front, the Peoples' Front of Judea, the Judean Peoples' Popular Front and so on, each one with its own set of acronyms.

Mark - is it a sensible coding proposition to look for defined abbreviations earlier in the same post before looking at a potentially huge list that could slow everything down? It would be great to have acronyms explained but it would be unfortunate if we ended up with ambiguities or an endless list of rarely used acronyms coded while more common ones slip through the net just because nobody thought of them ahead of time.

[unm]tango[/unm], you raise a very good point about creating a huge list of abbreviations. We really only want those that are commonly used, and those that are not as commonly used should as you say be explained at the first occurrence in the post and then freely used in the remainder of that post. On my math help forum, we defined only the most commonly used abbreviations for pretty much the reasons you so lucidly explained. We have a list of 29 abbreviations/acronyms.

Multiple occurrences of abbreviations are all replaced in one step (with PHP's str_replace() function) so the number of replacements done is equal to the number of unique abbreviations in a post only.

I think what we are really asking for here is those abbreviations that are more specific to the site mission of Christianity Haven. Text-speak abbreviations are widely known by most online users, but denominational abbreviations may not be as clear to everyone in our community here.

However, all suggestions are welcome and appreciated...and what will likely happen is that once the decision is made to move forward with this there will be a staff/advisor discussion to determine which will be on the list. :D

Even though I agree with your sentiments, where I was thinking much the same thing when I first saw this thread, the concept does help us to better understand the terminology that is frequently found within Christian circles. For those abbreviations that have multiple meanings, such as with IHOP, if we were to place the secular group in quotation marks <"IHOP"> could this maybe remove its preset link?

AoG - Assemblies of God
AOG - Assemblies of God
AoGAust - AoG Australia (and maybe others such as AoGUK for England, presuming that the British employ this term)
BHS - Baptism in the Holy Spirit
LXX - Greek Septuagint
OT - Old Testament
NT - New Testament
MT - Masoretic Text
GNT - Greek New Testament

A selection of the more important Theological books:

BAGD - A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, by W. Aauer, F.W. Danker, W.F. Arndat, and F. W. Gingrich 2nd ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1979)

BDAG - A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, by W. Aauer, F.W. Danker, W.F. Arndat, and F. W. Gingrich 3rd ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000)

TDNT - Theological Dictionary of the New Testament,

NA27 - The Greek New Testament (Novum Testamentum Graece), 27th revised edition. Also known as the Nestle-Aland Greek Text 27th edition.
NA28 - The Greek New Testament (Novum Testamentum Graece), 28th revised edition. Also known as the Nestle-Aland Greek Text 28th edition.
UBS3 - The Greek New Testament, 3rd revised edition
UBS4 - The Greek New Testament, 4th revised edition

Edit: Added clarifications and UBS3

Hopefully the link to these abbreviations will only be lightly coloured as the current bold blue text for the hyperlinks are a bit distracting. It might be helpful if there could be a switch where where the OP could turn off this feature if this highlights become a bit too much in a more technical post.
