The fires in LA made me wonder about this...if you only have an hour to grab anything you can from your home before an evacuation. What would you realistically grab and carry out with you?

I'd probably tell my wife to grab anything that was specifically important to her, while I gathered up things like my laptop and a few practical items. I'd need my laptop to do things like get online and make sure bills were paid, and I have digital copies of documents that are important. We also have a smallish wooden box where we keep things that are financially more or less worthless but special to us in some way, so we'd make sure to grab that.

Aside from a few personally special things, and a few practical things we'd need to maintain some level of continuity, insurance can replace the rest.

We have a folder with the important paperwork, so we'd grab that and I'd love to grab my daughter's baby photos, but I have those on digital now, so maybe I should go for some other things. Get a suitcase and throw in a bunch of clothing, all our meds, shampoos (since I'm allergic to the hotel ones), some mementos from my family, our baby books and the box that has our degrees. Of course while I'm doing that, my husband would be grabbing chargers, the laptops and his beer fridge ;)

Doesn't hurt to have all that prepared in advance so you only have to grab one ready to go bag and run.

You may not get an hours notice, some things can move really fast.
