People keep saying that the book of Tobit is historically inaccurate, because it says Sennacherib became king after his father Shalmaneser.
They say, “Shalmaneser was king, and then Sargon was king for 17 years, and then Sennacherib was king.”
However, that’s not possible. Because 2 Kings 18 says that Shalmaneser was king during the 6th year of Hezekiah. And then 8 years later, during the 14th year of Hezekiah, Sennacherib is king.
Clearly, you cannot fit more than 8 years between Shalmaneser and Sennacherib. Therefore, you cannot fit 17 years of Sargon between them. Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Brittanica are wrong on this one, because they contradict 2 Kings 18.
2 Kings 18 says absolutely NOTHING about Sargon. By the looks of it, Sennacherib really does come immediately after Shalmaneser, just like Tobit says.
Sargon is only mentioned in Isaiah 20:1, but it doesn’t say who came before him, or who came after him. There’s no indication where he fits on the timeline.
So, where does Sargon fit into the timeline?
