In biblical times, people were given powers to heal, but you have to remember that it wasn't for them to become famous, it was to always give credit to God, and point to the Messiah.

Moses standing before the Pharos magicians in Egypt is a good example of this, and as he led Israel out of Egypt and through the desert as well.
