When our kids were growing up and did this almost every evening.

this should be a family norm. it starts breaking up when the kids take on jobs and college. There is something to be said for a large family (6 or more perhaps) and well spaced, so that one always has children around the house as they are a blessing. Worst is when they move away and then are not around much.
