For example, turning over the tables in the temple or calling people white-washed tombs?

Point out that the 'why' of his doing it is what was important, not the way it was done.

This opens a point of discussion instead of closing one.

Actions can be taken out of context as easily as words.

It would depend on the context. If someone is a whitewashed tomb it seems fair to call it out. Some would counter with "judge not lest ye be judged yourself" but that in turn ignores the context of Matthew 7:1
