The Dirty Dozen would have to be among my favorites for war movies. I generally don't watch them but that one is really good!

I can enjoy softball movies about the military like Mister Roberts, but I am impressed by those that are more realistic, despite the doleful nature of the subject. Therefore, my list would include All Quiet on the Western Front, Hacksaw Ridge, Paths of Glory, Empire of the Sun, and Saving Private Ryan. Even Apocalypse Now. However, Lamms friend certainly has seen all of these if he is any fan of war movies at all.

I've only heard of 2 of those from the list! LOL I'll have to look up the others. My friend is in his 20s so he might not know older films.

Saving Private Ryan is among the best, if he likes older productions then the Great Escape is good too

I liked Saving Private Ryan
I saw Casualties of War and it was very hard to watch as are many war movies.

You know, I came very close to putting something like the (sorta) alongside my nomination of Hacksaw Ridge, too. The first part of the movie seems rather lame, but then when the action scenes come in...wow.

These two may be a bit older, but he may still enjoy them - someone already mentioned Full Metal Jacket. Great film! Also, this one's from the early 60's, but is extremely well done - "Dr. Strangelove (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)". The premise is a rogue General believes that Flouridation of water is a communist plot and he orders bomber jets to attack Russia. It's really quite funny, but with some pretty intense moments. Peter Sellers stars, playing three characters in the film.

Heres one that is usually overlooked when people talk about war movies--Zulu. And one more that occurs to me is Stalingrad (1995 version) . Both of those really put the viewer into the middle of the action and not just because of special effects or the violence/action.

It was for its time. It may be couched in dry comedy, but it played to real fears about nuclear war. And it addresses those things as well.
It's just that my tastes are a bit different than the typical "Saving Private Ryan" fare.

Well, it related to war or to the threat of war, etc. But I think that when most people speak of "war movies," they mean movies that depict war and people caught up in them. Strangelove was about imaginary politicians.

Then, in that case, "Saving Private Ryan" :dunno:

So now we know that someone else also considers this to be a war movie, but it barely qualifies. So would The Best Years of Our Lives by that standard. Would you call it a war movie?
