What I liked about your former pastor is that he gave you a tool of discerning for yourself that has served you well all these years by the sound of it. What remains untouched in us will remain something with which we can never touch others with, thereby never being able to pass on the life giving Spirit to others.

Indeed. Years ago I read this book. I like the title.

Through brokenness, others can see the light within us. I wonder what it was like for the woman at the well after Jesus stayed two days with the people of her town. Is it possible that some of them were among the 120 souls that received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost? I guess not many people think of her past the time Lord Jesus spent with them.

Why not? Like God we are also a triune being, body, soul, spirit.
Ephesians 3:16-19
I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Amen

(as a side note Yah 1000 posts I'm now a veteran!!!)

Everyone who drinks of the water of materialism will thirst again.
Introspection of who is the husband of the one partaking (of the woman at the well) touches on the history of immorality, giving an opportunity of repentance.

Questions such as required a yes or no answer of the physical
John 8:3-5
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
John 9:2-3
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
but the Lord Jesus turned her to the spiritual aspect
John 4:21-24
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

God here is Trinity. Spirit is the nature. To worship God Who is Spirit we must worship with our human spirit, which has been awakened to the same nature as He. Jesus was urging the Samaratan woman to contact God the Spirit with her spirit to drink the living water (which is Christ Himself) so as in drinking she could render real worship to God.

God choose His habitation as the place of worship (Deut 12) and the offerings (Lev 1-6) which in typology is the human spirit.

Ephesians 2:22
In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Christ is truth and the fountain of the life water, the life giving Spirit

John 4:26
Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

This word Jesus gave her to believe that she would have eternal life. Believing she told others.

The Samaritans had little learning but the harvest was ripe for those who had done no sowing.

I think that's God's food in satisfying the sinner with the living water. God sows love in the heart that is a testament to others.

Have you lifted up your eyes to look upon the fields lately?

I think a funamental difference is whether one is being A) subjective or B) objective.

John 20:31
but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

When He had spoken all those things to her she believed.

John 4:29
Come, see a man who told me all that I have done. Is this not the Christ?

The woman at the well was subjective rather than objective when she put into action that which Jesus had taught her.

That's how Lutherans believe about Justification.

Objectively Christ won salvation for us at the cross.

Subjectively the Holy Spirit gives us faith to believe.

I think a lot of scripture can be read in those two facets of objectivity and subjectivity.

Whereas Abraham believed it was counted to him as faith (objectively) Romans 4
Sarah is the analogy of grace (subjective) Galatians 4
so both are needed.
Yes, it's kinda the nutshell of God's work in us!
