The Trump campaign is doing something smart

They are sitting back and watching the Democrats fight. We've heard less out of Donald Trump in the past week than anytime I can remember. I bet there were planning on announcing the VP pick this week but decided to wait because they want to keep the "Will he or won't he step down" debate in the news cycle. The Republican Convention is next week. I bet if they could, the RNC would postpone it until people stop talking about Biden's age.

Observers seem to think that what you described was a good decision. While the Democrats are in turmoil, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to take the media's attention off from all of that and move it to something else.

What's more, if it's true that Trump has always had his choice of VP in mind but has just been waiting for the right moment to make the announcement, these past two weeks were certainly not the best time for making that decision public.

He doesn't have to announce before the Convention, that's true; but since 1980 there's been only one time that the ultimate Presidential nominee of either party didn't announce his choice of VP prior to the Convention. (That's not counting re-election campaigns in which the President and Vice-President were already in office.)

I think it's smart to not give the Democrats any reason to change the topic to Republicans...keep the focus on Biden's feebleness.

Probably so, but the new date for the Democrat nominating "convention," which is slated to take place only a few days after the Republicans wrap up, will be a fairly lackluster event since it will take place online, not in person, and will have as its main purpose to nominate Biden and end the speculation about him stepping aside or being replaced. Then the rest of the usual boring convention business is supposed to be taken up at the time and place originally intended--in late August.
