To anticipate possible misunderstandings the third commandment is (according to Catholic numbering) this:
Deuteronomy 5:12-15
Catholics sometimes construct a Church building's interior with the ten commandments in mind, there can be seven steps up to the sanctuary and then three steps up to the altar. The seven steps being the seven commandments for governing relationships between one human and another and the three steps being for the three commandments governing the relationship between human beings and their God. But most Catholic church buildings have only the three steps up to the altar and the whole area surrounding the alter is regarded as the Church building's sanctuary.
The above observations are only superficial because how one constructs a building is a small matter yet is reflects some of the love, awe, and sanctity of the men and women who design and build such structures and it is intended to reflect something of the glory of God revealed in Christ and also in the types and shadows of the tabernacle and temple.
Yet this thread is about the commandment to observe the sabbath. And the natural question to ask is how do you observe the sabbath?
Observe the day of the Sabbath, so that you may sanctify it, just as the Lord your God has instructed you. For six days, you shall labour and do all your work. The seventh is the day of the Sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor shall your son, nor daughter, nor man servant, nor woman servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner who is within your gates, so that your men and woman servants may rest, just as you do. Remember that you also were servants in Egypt, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Because of this, he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.
